I almost didn't realise this was coming out this week, no one even mentioned it in any of the recent Hellboy interviews or articles but this story could be just as important for any Hellboy/BPRD fan as the most recent issue of Hellboy.
The Hellboy spin-off started when he left the BPRD and since then have only been a few references to the big red until this issue where we see Kate from the BPRD monitoring news coverage showing the destruction of Southern England, as shown in Hellboy: The Fury. This little reference to a big event we've already seen reminds me of DC/Marvel events and their tie-in books.
The majority of the issue is not focused on England but Kate in a small trailer park where havoc has unraveled, she's started to run into trouble, looking for a peaceful life, and my guess is she'll be back on the BPRD team soon enough. This part of the book has been a good introduction to the series for Tyler Crook. Crook's art compliments the book very well and has a Guy Davis-esque feel to it but it hasn't hit it's stride yet and i'm guessing he will fall into a groove as he becomes more comfortable.
But the last scene of the book shocked me more than anything. Big Spoiler: Abe Sapien has also died. This revelation was a cliffhanger for the book so we don't know much more apart from that he died in the afternoon and my guess is that we're led to assume around the same time as Hellboy. I think this should have gained more coverage, Abe Sapien has been around as long as Hellboy, from the first miniseries Seed of Destruction. It is possible that through some miracle or other plotline that Abe is alive but I guess we find out in the next series, BPRD Hell on Earth: Russia.
