I'm pretty much done reading this. I have about 11 more story pages to go, and then whatever they got in the back.
The G-Men were funny as hell. Their leader, Mister Godolkin, is like a mix of Professor Xavier and Micheal Jackson. So funny!! It was like their academy of supes was Jackson's Neverland Ranch! Hah Hah!!
It was just lovely how they picked "Petit Hughie" to be their undercover supe to infiltrate the G-Men's secret territy. Bagpipe. Fucking classic!! I love it. The sad part is that he actually fit right in with them. At least he didn't join in the fun in the Porn Room though. I couldn't believe they showed them guys doing that to each other in a comic book! Gross!
The guy who is supposed to be Wolverine's metaphor was classic too. He just keeps saying, "Gonna!" for some reason. They never really tell you why.
Terror is a cool as hell dog but I would still bitch slap him if ate a copy of Detective Comics #28. I guess a cool million isn't much to a guy like Butcher who shoots up 19 Billion dollars worth of Compound V every week but a copy of Detective #27 is enough for a guy like me to eat for a long time, and do some other stuff. Maybe the copy Terror ate was a reprint though? Who knows?
The one thing that pisses me off about volume four is that you hardly get to see The Seven, who are The Boy's main targets usually. I think Homelander is the one who raped Butcher's wife back in the day but I don't see where it has been revealed as FACT yet. I can't wait to see how that is going to develop, but if that is the context of The Boys you are most interested in, you might as well skip volume four because the entire volume gets side-tracked with the story about the G-Men.
Don't get me wrong, the story about Hughie on the inside with the G-Men is a whole bunch of fun, but mostly pointless because in the end, it turns out that Vought America are the ones who actually take the G-Men out of the equation. Frenchie, Hughie (or Bag Pipe LOL), and The Female did all that undercover brother work for practically nothing. They join up with the rest of the clan, Butcher who was probably off getting in in with Director Rayner somewhere, and Mother's Milk who was investigating the death of one of the original G-Men, and then they stand off against the G-Men, but the second they about to throw hands, Vought America comes down and just totally kills the G-Men with flame throwers, guns, and saws. I was wondering what those were for in the beginning too, then you finally find out towards the end.
The thing I don't understand is: if The Boys and Vought America are lethel enemies, how come Vought didn't have the army try to take down The Boys too?! I mean if they can kill the G-Men who have been on Compound V since they were "wee lads," then they probably could have had a shot at taking down The Boys also.
I guess it's best not to think about it. The guys from Vought America just comes up to Butcher and says, "we can clean up our own shit."
I bought issue #s 31 and 32 when I picked up volume four at Jesters Playhouse. I'm about to be caught up to the point where I can just spend $2.99 a month and pull The Boys. I can't believe they are only charging $2.99 for this!! Even Irredeemable is $3.99 now.
I wonder if Herogasm is $2.99 or $3.99 because I'm getting that next. My LCS had #2 but I just told the guy to put it in my box because he has to find me a copy of #1. I'm definitely checking out Herogasm. People say that, "if you love The Boys, then you'll like Herogasm almost as much." I'll check that out.
So The Boys is my new favorite series from Garth Ennis. I finished Preacher like a month ago. I read the first hardcover of Punisher MAX but I really wasn't dying to run out and get volume 2 (or volume 3 in softcover either) anymore then I wanted to buy volume 4 of 100 Bullets and get back into that, so I just jumped over to The Boys instead. I don't know if I'm gonna go as far as to say that, "The Boys is better then Preacher" even though in some ways it really is a little bit better. The colors are a lot glossier anyway.
If somebody came up to me right now and asked: "Think fast, Hotshot! What's better? Preacher or The Boys?", I'd probably HAVE TO say Preacher, but The Boys isn't over yet. If they are only shooting for 60-something issues, then The Boys is about half over now. I would hope that they try to stretch it a little further this time. After all, this is a totally different decade now, millenium actually, so totally different things are possible now, in and out of the industry. Shit, they made 100 Bullets last 100 issues and I couldn't get past volume three of that. They definitely should be able to squeeze a lot of cool ideas out of this franchise, they already have a spin off called Herogasm out there!!
Or maybe Ennis could let somebody else take over writing if he wanted to leave and do something else. That would probably ruin it though. Well the last arc of Punisher MAX I read wasn't too terrible and Garth hasn't been on that in a while now. I believe it was called Six Hours To Kill and it was pretty decent when I compared it to the Irish Mob story I read in Ennis' run, but if anybody had taken over Preacher when Ennis left, that would've been a disaster so I don't know. I'm just rambling now.
I love The Boys though. I don't know why nobody on this site ever talks about it, or anything but DC and Marvel books actually now that I think about it. I don't even see any reviews about Vertigo books unless they were a dollar, unless I wrote them. More people need to check out The Boys, Herogasm, or Irredeemable. I like Batman and Spiderman a lot but they aren't the only thing I read, therefore they're not the only characters I like to conversate about.
...but anyway, I got like nine or 10 pages left so I better get on with finishing this review without actually finishing the book. Watch, something will happen where it'll be worth writing another review about when I'm done probably. Then I'm gonna read #31 and 32 and hope another issue comes out soon. Probably not for a damn month, DAMMIT!!
