I don't really get all the complaining about The Boys and this story arc in particular. The shock value mixed with superheroes works for me, and when that wears thin there are still character moments like Wee Hughie and Annie's relationship to keep the series grounded.
This recent arc has been a good mix of these two aspects, as we watch third-string superheroes try to fit in and bond anyway they can. Yeah, the shocking bits are pretty shocking (this is the book that will out-Preacher Preacher, people!), but in this most recent issue Ennis really conveyed how much G-Wiz depend on each other, making Wee Hughie's betrayal all the more devastating to them. This is good storytelling.
The only thing that bothered me about the issue was that the art seemed a bit off from Robertson's usual work. It wasn't bad, just not quite right. Then I realized Robertson didn't actually draw the issue, and it all made sense.
