There needs to be a new award this year at the Eisners and should have Geoff Johns name inscribed on it by the time you finish this review, and it should be for best architect. The miniseries itself only has so many pages for an idea this grand. Blackest Night will deal with the large scope who will win who will lose nature of any mega event, Green Lantern and the Corp will deal with the legion of rings and how each is effected during this battle, the other miniseries clearly are giving the big characters view of this event, but Titans Blackest Nights maybe doing the most important job of all. How truly horrific and scary the entire premise of this series is.
There is a sense of loss and yearning in Batman and Superman Blackest Nights, and while this does that as well, Krul amps up the scares and horror elements that seem to just pass by in the other books. Like "The Others" the scares can be soft and shocking like the baby carriage that is staring at Donna Troy or they can be visceral and gross like Terra and Gar that reads like Jack Nicholson kissing the dead woman in "The Shining." There is that sense of loss like the other books, but also a sense that you failed the dead and they are coming back for payback.
It's easy to forget how horrific this is when it seems that all the dead want to do is kill you, but when you add guilt and melancholy its something far more sinister. Krul so far has done the best job of this. From the first page of showing how characters attempt to drown out the pain of loss to Gar needing to believe in Terra, the Titans have a far different look at death than most characters. Dick Grayson and Superman should feel horrified their loved ones are coming back, but there shouldn't feel guilt or failure that these Titan characters feel. They let their friends die, and in that comes incredible horror. This book is bringing the horror, the sheer terror to the forefront.
One cannot also overlook what could be a major plot point just dropped in the middle of the Hawk vs. Hawk and Dove scene. What many on the internet have alluded to was finally scene on the page. If there is a black ring there must also be a white ring. Now what the actual ring represents is or what it does has not been made clear. We know that to be at peace is the antithesis of the black ring. Geoff John's is allowing these tidbits to come out in the other books because he has created such a perfect tapestry to tell this story. Krul and Benes are just the right guys that are lucky enough to get horror book of the series.
