I don’t know if I really cared for this issue, precisely. But I’m also not sure if I disliked it. It’s just weird.

I’ll say this: the action’s pretty cool, and there’s some really good panels of the Birds fighting the Infiltrators (who, unfortunately, have tremendously stupid names like Head and Flesh). And the script is fine. I just find it leaving me kind of cold in the end. It’s hard to care about what’s happening here, for whatever reason.

Frankly, I think BIRDS OF PREY needs to step back and spend a little more character time. It’s through the Choke plot, and it’s really overdue for it.

It’s a fun issue to look at. I just don’t know if it’s much more.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. You took the words out of my mouth. As great as the action is, I don’t feel like I really know any of these characters that well. Clearly, things are happening that should shed some light on Black Canary’s history, but I think I’d like to see a “breather” issue at this point.

I’ll be back for the Owls tie-in next month and we’ll see how it goes. It will also be Travel Foreman’s first issue — I don’t dislike his work, but I’ve been loving Jesus Saiz, so the art change might be another thing that gets me to drop this one.

    • I’m not sold on Foreman. I think he’s down some really creepy stuff for ANIMAL MAN, which works there, but the not-creepy stuff in that book is just so-so for me, and that’s the limit of my experience. I’ve been liking the art in BIRDS to this point, so I hope the switch doesn’t detract from the book.
