I’ve spent the last six months bemoaning the rocky storytelling of this series’ second arc, “To Drown the World”, which blessedly wrapped up last month. And while this story – titled “World’s Finest”, but not to be confused with the series of that name featuring Power Girl and Huntress – is not quite a return to form, it’s a return to something distinctly like it.
Williams is back on art, though he doesn’t quite look like himself here, or at least not quite like himself this time last year; the style reminds me a bit more of PROMETHEA, which makes sense, I suppose, given Wonder Woman’s involvement in the upcoming story. This book still has the most unique layouts on the shelves all the same, though occasionally that means that the text on the page is included a bit awkwardly.
W. Haden Blackman is back in the co-writer slot, and it shows, I think, though this issue still suffers from some awkward transitions. In the storytelling, the disastrous effects of the sometimes-incomprehensible “To Drown the World” can be felt, because we’re expected to have a better understanding of some of the characters and plot twists it introduced than we really do.
By all indications, though, this series finds linear storytelling more or less like riding a bicycle, and I’m glad that I could enjoy the start of Kate’s next adventure without bizarre time jumps and “Wait, am I supposed to know who that is?” moments.
