Convinces Me That Sciver Could Make Just About Anything Beautiful. It’s interesting to me that Ethan Van Sciver landed on what is arguably the fourth or fifth tier Bat-book (certainly behind Batman, Detective, and Batman Inc.), but his appearance here was certainly enough to convince me to come back to this book – especially after it had fallen off my pull list because of the disappointing, preceding Scarecrow storyline. So … let’s start with the obvious. This book looks fantastic! Everything about Sciver’s art is wonderful – from the detail, to his backgrounds, to his characters. Sold on the art! The story … also off to a surprisingly good start. It might irk me in other areas that it seems everything of the nuDCU is darker, grittier and more bloody, but I like Hurwitz’s take on the Mad Hatter (and the two Tweedle brothers). Here’s hoping there’s a whole “Wonderland” gang coming (as there appears to be) – with designs by Sciver. That ought to look sweet. The only place the book didn’t thrill me was the appearance of Natalya [sic?] the pianist who seems a pretty dull love interest for Bruce. It’s not really a spoiler to discover that she suspects Bruce might be Batman – Natalya meet Silver St. Cloud, Vicki Vale, and Sasha Bordeaux, among others – so hopefully there’s a curve ball coming that’ll make her a bit more relevant. Otherwise, I wish these pages had been spent on the Hatter. Regardless … count me back in on this book for now.
