So someone or something is BOOM tubing alternate Batmen and Supermen from one Earth to another Earth, resulting in said heroes having to face-off with themselves.

Sound familiar? Yeah, this is heading into “All-New X-Men” territory.

And that’s a good thing cause All-New X-Men is a great comic and all that time-traveling shit is a blast and leads to wacky hi-jinks. While not as wacky as X-Men, Batman/Superman is one of the more fun and enjoyable reads staring our two main leads to come out of DC in quiet sometime. In fact, I honestly can’t believe this comic is even being published – I have this unshakable fear that either Greg Pak or Jae Lee will depart this series by issue 3 or 4 – I mean that seems to DC’s M.O of late, anything new and fresh and cutting edge doesn’t last long, replaced by the mediocre and stale (IE: Earth 2, Suicide Squad, Action Comics, Green Lantern, so on and so on).

With this in mind I’m going to savor every inch of this series – and man, what a series so far. Pak’s writing is pitch perfect while remaining aloof – not an easy task – but Pak instills each character with a voice we immediately recognize, all the while making them brand new.

And enhancing every aspect of the story being told here is the art by Jae Lee. What can I say except to say it is mind blowing good. There are some pages here where I just stared at for minutes, mesmerized by the simplistic beauty of Lee’s lines and shapes. Lee is a master artist and makes use of negative space like no one else in comics. His compositions are eloquently constructed and laid out – and I can’t get enough of it. He makes this comic an absolute must read – or should I say “must stare”?

Please DC do not fuck things up here. Keep your stinking paws off this series and let Pak and Lee loose to deliver a comic unfettered and awe-inspiring.

Is that too much to ask?

POTW!

  1. What are not liking about Green Lantern? I’m really digging it. I’m just asking out of curiosity…

    • I was referring to when DC had Joshua Hale Fialkov lined up to take over after Geoff Johns left – but even before Fialkov got started he left the book sighting the ol’ “Creative Differences”. Word on the street was that he didn’t like DC’s idea to kill off John Stewart and he bailed.

I will say the current writer of Green Lantern, Robert Venditti isn’t doing that bad of a job and the comic is serviceable – I just can’t help but think what might have been with Fialkov at the helm.

    • I thought he was just going to take over GL Corps and Red Lanterns? I can’t help thinking Falkov overreacted since Jenson and Venditti haven’t killed John off yet (they even poked fun at the idea in the last issue of GL Corps) and I find it unlikely they will.
