I was unsure about buying this book, so instead I just sat in my LCS and read the whole to get a feel for it. It’s different.

The opening of the story was nice in how it contrasted Clark and Bruce in their civilian identities and internal philosophies. Also nice that it involved children as the focus of this, since both had very formative childhoods. Then things get kind of weird when Batman and Superman meet and it becomes a practice brawl. It’s entertaining in that you see both are starting out but still pretty recognizable to who they’ll become. Things get really weird when these zombie robots show up. There’s a reason in the story, but it still comes as a surprise (why would anyone want these as a security system?). Then at the end there’s a time skip and we’re in the present day. Someone in the comments suggested this might be Earth 2 and that’s a possibilty but I feel like that’s too left field for DC right now. Time will tell.

Jae Lee’s art is cool. It’s pretty much like his Ozymandias work, which can be jarring but I think it fits with Pak’s story. I’d love to see him to interiors for JLD but I think he’s too big for that. I knew in advance that a second artist took over at the end, but honestly I didn’t notice until after I finished reading and looked over the pages again. So I guess that means I didn’t mind the change too much. Maybe Lee’s stuff is in the past and the other guy’s is in the present.

I ended up leaving the book in my pullfile at my LCS (along with 5 other books I didn’t have money to cover) because I’m just not sold on it yet. It’s not bad, it just might not be what I’m looking for. Also the $3.99 thing, I have enough of those and I’m not looking for another. But I will read the next issue, and if the story can come together a little better, or just explain the time jump or the main villain; I may pick up the series anyway.

If neither of the Bat books or Supe books are getting your dollars, this might interest you.

  1. Your LCS must love you.

    • Y’know the owner did tell me that once but I couldn’t tell if he was joking. But I’ve doing business with them for 8 years so I hope we’re on good terms. The one who was running the store at the time didn’t bother me and I still made some purchases before I left.
