Of all the issues so far in this series, I have to say that I think this one is the weakest.  It wasn’t terrible, per se, but I feel like a little bit of the energy and a little bit of the concept got left out.  The issue does feature Bruce being a badass cowboy, which is very awesome.  But what seems to be missing is more pieces of the mystery and more reference to the bigger picture.  You know, maybe it is that they are there, and I’m just missing them.  I know that in this issue Thomas Wayne makes an appearance (and I had no idea he was several hundred years old), and somewhere, I think Vandal Savage does as well (although Wayne refers to a character who claims to be dying of cancer as “Savage,” so I only assume).  I really enjoy the idea that Bruce’s interaction with the Bat People in the first issue is slowly becoming a myth of everlasting life.  One of the things I felt was missing from the issue was more exposure to the team of heroes tracking Bruce through time, which I felt added a nice layer to the mystery as they slowly figure out what’s going on along with the reader.  I realize there’s a separate mini-series currently going on, but their absence is felt in this issue. Also, I felt Morrison’s characterization of Jonah Hex was a bit off as he writes him to be an order following neanderthal with no thought to what’s right and wrong.  We all know Hex walks the fine line, but I would think he wouldn’t follow the orders of the people in this issue.  Jeanty does a fine job of filling in, although there’s nothing overly special with his art. His storytelling works out just fine, and I was never lost.  It just didn’t have any sort of “wow” factor to it.
