Rucka and Morrison. I could not think of two more superficially dissimilar writers. When I think of Rucka I think of strategic sober calculation. When I think of Morrison I think of crazy surrealist explosion.

So here we have a Rucka character (Batwoman) playing around in a Morrison world. Craziness abounds, but Batwoman gives us a sane entry point. Morrison has said he thinks the real world is more like a David Lynch movie than cinema verite. Like Robot Man in Doom Patrol or Kyle MacLachlan in Blue Velvet, Batwoman in Batman, Inc. #5 gives us a sane perspective that makes the surrounding surreality seem all the more insane in contrast.

And that line where she calls her dad ‘dad’ instead of ‘sir’… (credit to letterer Pat Brosseau for a poignant font size reduction ) Morrison does emotional truth as well as any artist I’ve encountered. His characters might deal with super sci-fi events you’ve never dealt with, but they deal with emotions you’ve dealt with.

  1. This is an excellent review. I can’t wait to re-read this issue with this perspective in mind.

  2. Thanks Roland! One of my favorite things about Morrison is his infinite re-readability.

  3. Morrison = re-reability. No question.
