One of the legends of comics is that Bernie Wrightson once did a Batman story composed entirely of full-page spreads. That story makes up the first half of this beautiful-looking one-shot from DC. The lead is a fairly straightforward story, and the splash-page format causes a couple of pages to have way too much text, but it worked for me just enough to sell Wrightson’s magnificent art.

The same goes for the backup, a Batman/Swamp Thing story written by Len Wein and drawn by Wrightson, with all-new colors. The story and dialogue are Silver Age to the core, and not always in a good way – compared to Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing run this is a painful read. But Wein says in the afterword that this story contains his single favorite drawing of Batman, and he’s not wrong. If you love great art, pick this one up.

Story: 4 - Very Good
