After reading about “Batman: Gates of Gotham” I was immediately intrigued. Supposedly the mini-series is going to reflect back on some past plot points as well as set the table for some future storylines.

The first issue opens with an interesting three page flashback to 1881 Gotham City and an introduction to some of the powerful families of the time. It’s a well written setup to the issue’s main story and an obvious key component of the overall direction. Scott Snyder and Kyle Higgins’ writing is solid and moves at a good pace for an opening issue. Most importantly it has the look and feel of a Batman book.

Trevor McCarthy’s art isn’t bad but it’s inconsistent. His work fits the mood of a Batman book but he underplays the action on some panels by paying almost no attention to detail. Other panels look cluttered and some of his characters look off (particularly the Penguin). But there are also parts of his art that work including a slick action sequence on a bridge, some great panels with Gordon, and a nice end page.

This issue has me primed and ready for issue #2. I’m anxious to see where it’s heading. The writing is steady and while the art lacks consistency it does have it’s moments. All in all this was a fun book.
