I was very pleasently surprised by this book. I wasn’t expecting a whole lot – I’m not a Manga fan and Batman mini’s usually leave me cold. But for twice the page count for the same price as a regular book, why not give it a shot?

Natsume appears to be offering a more focused story about the “Bruce Wayne as the mask” idea that has been a staple of the Batman character for several years now. While the story idea isn’t anything new, it does appear to be exploring that aspect of the character much more than any of the other ideas associated with Batman or superheroes in general. It also appears the next issue will focus on some of Bruce Wayne’s training time in Japan, so that could prove interesting.

The art wasn’t spectacular – it told the story without being confusing, but looked like average Manga art. Not bad, but nothing that popped. Although no one had huge round eyes, so that was a plus.

A surprisingly good read that does show some promise for future issues, even if it is delving into an over-analyzed aspect of the Batman character.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
