After reading the first three issues of Batman Confidential, I had completley written off this series, moving it into the pantheon of worthless spin-offs.  But then, Peter J. Tomasi and Kevin Maguire come along and produce a story that makes this title relevant, exciting, and most of all fun.  Needing much poking and prodding from the rave reviews on iFanboy.com, I decided to stick my toe back into the Confidential pool, and I’m glad I did because the water is fine, mighty fine indeed.

The past two issues of this story arch were just damn fun to read and really captured what makes Catwoman and Batgirl so much fun to read.  Each of them had distinct personalities that clashed.  It was like reading a really good “buddy cop” movie, only the characters aren’t cops or buddies and they wear spandex.  This issue gives us much of the same, but now we see a story springing forth and an interesting one at that.  As the mystery behind Catwoman’s involvement is revealed, we find a conflicted (but in a good way) Batgirl giving her a helping hand.  As would be expected in the third issue in a series of five, things go really bad really fast, and the last page is pretty surprising.  But it’s surprising in the way that makes you intrigued with what’s to come, and if done right, could add a really nice extra layer to the whole storyline that should make this a perfect read for any fan of Batman, Catwoman, or Barbara Gordon.

Not surprisingly, Maguire’s art is excellent in this issue.  His female characters have this sexy softness to them, yet they have a strength and guile that hides behind their bodacious bodies.  His paneling is dynamic and each page presents a different perspective for telling this narrative.  His pencils add to the fun that this arc creates, and it’s a really nice touch.

If you’ve missed this series so far, I really reccommend you track down the back issues and catch up.  It’s one of the better, more fun Bat-family books being put out right now.  I would even go so far to say that it’s one of the best non-Batman stories going (although Tomasi’ Nightwing is a ridiculously close second).
