Despite hearing great things about this issue, I wasn’t very impressed.  I wasn’t a big fan of Grant Morrison’s Batman run, especially R.I.P. and I was hope for a fresh start and I didn’t get it.  It’s hard to understand because I love what he has done in the pages of Batman & Robin.  I guess he has two very different plans for each book and has different styles for writing each.  My main problem with Morrison’s Batman is he tries to borrow from Batman’s history of all the different media and time periods and tie them together.  For me it just doesn’t work and I find it a little confusing.  If he continues to write Batman after this it will probably be better to read in trade where you can read everything together.

With that out of the way let me talk about the art.  I loved all the different styles in this book and I loved the look of the future Batman. It was almost medieval looking. I was surprised with the Andy Kubert art as well. It not that I didn’t like it but I could tell it was him on the art. I think this was due to the colors.

If this is any indication how the flagship bat title will be I may have to pass on it. For now I’m sticking with Batman & Robin and Red Robin for my Batverse fix.

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. I’m a big fan of Morrison’s run, but I totally agree with your review of this particular issue.  I read it twice and I still have no fucking idea what the fuck is going on.  At least I understood RIP after going back and reading Batman & Son AND The Black Glove trades.  This issue is just outright confusing with nothing to go back and read to make things make sense.

I want my five bucks back!!
