I’ve been a little sick of seeing pain, anger, and angst as a character’s driving emotions for some time. I like it every once in a while but it seems to be the driving force behind many author’s characterizations. They sometimes forget heroes can have senses of humor, enjoy what they do, and still be interesting and worthwhile. Batgirl has been a breath of fresh air. She enjoys being a hero and I enjoy going along for the ride. The character is fun and relatable, the dialogue is sharp and I look forward to every issue coming out. It’s just good fun in comics. The artists have been consistently good. This month Ramon Bachs takes over art duties and he didn’t miss a beat. He did a great job with a whole host of facial expressions, which provide insight into the characters minds and allow us to feel more of a connection with them. Because of all the pain, anger, and angst going on, I think some artists forget to draw anything but rage and sorrow.
Here’s the greatest review I can give it: I only allow myself to buy two new books a week, and I buy Batgirl every single time it comes out. And believe me, there are a lot of books I want to read, but I just end up dollar-bin diving for them later. I want to read Batgirl right away.
