As Azrael draws to a close we’re treated to another issue which stands above the more recent instalments as a series highlight; this could be because the majority of the issue focuses on Bruce Wayne’s Batman, but it could also be because we’re finally getting resolution to the Azrael death story teased in the first issue. David Hine has crafted a story that has reached the logical conclusion, and with two issues left to go its uncertain where the character of Azrael will end up, particularly following his talk with Batman within this issue. Cliff Richards continues to draw some adequately engaging artwork, but never quite rises to the challenge of stunning the reader with his work – it’s good, but never quite amazing. The main flaw with this series, other than its focus on Azrael, is the strangeness of merging this fantasy world with the Batman universe; the parts of this issue featuring Azrael in a strange afterlife landscape don’t feel right, but maybe they’re all part of his crumbling mental state. Who knows? All I know is, this was enjoyable to read.
