The long-awaited Cyclops-Wolverine showdown is here and…yeah, that’s it. Don’t get me wrong, the dialogue is great. Although there are some common tropes used (including the requisite invocation of Jean and the requisite reaction from Wolverine), Logan has a great handle on the psychology of Scott, which leads to the best reflection this week on the whole status quo (Scott’s life, the state of mutants going forward, what to do about the Extinction team). Seriously, take just the talk from here, expand it a little, put it in Uncanny #20, and put the material of Uncanny in here, and both would have been better books (If the last panel of the dialogue in this book was THE LAST PANEL of Uncanny, it becomes a PotW contender for sure). But my problem is I got to the end of the issue and thought, “That’s all? For $3.99?” I’m sure it was a 22 page book (I read it digitally so I wasn’t as aware of the pages), but it felt very slight content-wise. That’s why I downgraded the story score to a 3. If you want to see a satisfying conclusion to Schism, the last year of the two main X-books, and AvX, read this book. Just maybe borrow it from a friend, or read the trade to get your money’s worth.
