One thing about the new Marvel status quo is that writers finally have time to examine individual characters. Last week gave us a short examination of Tony Stark in Invincible Iron Man; this week, Avengers: Initiative provides a study of Hank Pym. Pym has always been an interesting character in the Marvel U, as he is more often working as a researcher than acting as a superhero. The fact that he has never settled on a single superhero identity makes this more interesting.
Pym's new challenge is his return from Skrull captivity. Things are not going well. The Wasp, Pym's great love, has died. Pym learns that his impostor struck up a sexual relationship with Tigra. And he has no idea what the Initiative is all about (despite the fact that he is its boss).
A nice subplot is provided on the identity of Mutant X. The best part of this story is that the Taskmaster determines Mutant X's identity in a very clever way.
This is a very good book, and it complements the other two Avengers books quite well. I hope that it will provide an opportunity for continued character studies, especially for the less prominent characters, who are not often seen in other Marvel books.

I was thinking about dropping this book after the last issue, but bought it just to make sure. After reading it, the book has stepped up from the whole SI tie in stuff. I agreed with your entire review. I thought Steve Kurth did a good job on art too. Hopefully they keep up the quality after this issue
I wasn’t impressed I’m afraid. True, the Pym/Jacosta stuff was pretty nice but the Mutant X bit just bugged the crap out of me. Overall this book has disappointed me.
