When The Initiative was announced, it sounded like a great idea to me. I thought it would be an anthology type of book, looking at the B or C class heroes in each state. At first i was a little disappointed that this book seldom left the recruits at the training facility.

Though they’ve recently been showing more of the heroes in other states, that’s not what I’m loving so much about this book now. The Initiative is how superhero books like Avengers used to be. There used to be stories that weren’t always about an epic battle or shadowy conspiracy or distrust. Superhero team books used to be fun, bright and brash starring bigger than life characters learning to control their powers. This book consistently delivers a fun read that feels like a throwback to those old stories.

The Irredeemable Ant-Man is a real hoot in this issue and there’s some interesting reveals about the secret identity of Mutant Zero. Even emo-boy Trauma is played to excellent effect as a tool of the Skrulls. We get to see some more personality behind Bengal and some great character moments with former villain Constrictor. I remain totally pumped for the new Skrull Kill Krew, led by 3D Man (formerly Triathlon).

This book does however continue the slightly unsavory swath of wanton killing (and consumption?) of Skrulls by heroes and former villains alike. The art is generally good, with consistent characterization, but some of the characters are a bit stiff and the exaggeration gets a little over the top. I count more than a few totally serious six packs on some guys and is it just me, or is the Skrull Queen Veranke, as Spider-Woman, sporting triple-D cups? As a fun side game, see if you can spot the Spider-Woman camel toe!

In all, this is another fun read in this book this month and I hope that wherever Secret Invasion goes, this book stays.
