I wasn’t wild about the premise of this story arc. In terms of his powers, Jeremy Briggs is a clone of Molecule Man and a number of other Marvel characters who are outrageously powerful, and have the ability to remake or alter the material world. The idea of “Superheroes cause too many problems, so I’m going to take away their powers” has been done, too. Remember “No more mutants?” But with Christos Gage, it’s all about the execution. The tension builds in this issue as the Avengers Academy kids are on the defensive, and must apply their wits to defeating a villain who has outmaneuvered them. We see new aspects to the characters as Finesse and Lightspeed show leadership ability, while we learn that White Tiger is addicted to her magic amulets. There’s humor in this issue, with the joke being on the villains. Big Zero isn’t racist, she just doesn’t like Reptil’s Mexican face. The ditsy Enchantress says that she has been studying the Stella Artois (A brand of beer) approach to acting when she means the Stella Adler method. The best dialogue in this comic is when Striker tells Enchantress an ambiguous sob story that is probably true, but also meant to manipulate her. It’s interesting that some of the Academy kids choose to oppose Briggs directly, while Striker decides to undermine him with guile.
Andrea DiVito’s art in this comic is looking good. Gotta love the comic, over-the-top gesturing and facial expressions of Enchantress. The panels where Striker convulses in pain are also happen to be excellent studies in anatomy. Speaking of Striker, I don’t know who designed his costume, but I think it’s an instant classic. The costume is actually just a silhouette with white stripes. It’s very simple, yet it looks cool and it expresses Striker’s power set.
