Although Avengers 1959 takes place in the past, it is a mini-series unencumbered by continuity or history. Anything you need to know about the characters you can find on the page and anyone can pick it up and enjoy it. For those who are into continuity and history, there are surprise appearances (the most surprising, for me, was a one panel appearance of Geist, a villain from VERY early in Wolverine's ongoing). We have followed Nick Fury and his Avengers as an attempt was made on their lives and they tracked whoever it was that wanted them dead. It turns out to be a secret fascist society that rose form the ashes of the Third Reich and this issue features their final battle and the aftermath. Although the story is not especially complicated, I had a little trouble following from issue to issue. I suspect that might be from reading month to month and a trade would read more smoothly. Art-wise, I've heard references to "Good Chaykin" and "Bad Chaykin" on iFanboy from time to time. Please be advised that I have never seen "Bad Chaykin," as he is one of my favorite artists. In closing, will Avengers 1959 change your life or make you reconsider the storytelling potential of the medium? No. Is is a fun, fast-paced story executed by one of the great storytellers of the medium? Yes. I think it's definitely worth a look, especially if you are a fan of Chaykin's work or mid-twentieth century intrigue (and let's face it, who isn't a fan of at least one of those things?)
