As a long time Avengers reader I had dropped these titles months ago. While many are fans of Bendis’ work on the title, personally I have not liked or enjoyed his writing or direction with The Avengers. But issue #13 was getting considerable buzz so I decided to give it a shot.

The first and most obvious thing is that this issue is light on action. Personally I like “talkie” issues and don’t always want cover to cover action. The problem here is that Bendis’ story isn’t all that impressive and heavily relies on goofy humor that for the most part doesn’t work. The writing isn’t horrible here but it certainly isn’t special either.

Then there’s Bachelo’s art. When I saw his name attached to the title I almost left it on the rack. I’ve never been a fan of his and that hasn’t changed after this issue. His annoying over-stylized characters are not only weird but were often times a distraction to me. There are certain panels where the characters just looked absurd (his Red Hulk and Thor panels come to mind). I know a lot of this has to do with preference but for me Bachalo’s art doesn’t compliment a story or help tell it.

Unfortunately this book features more “blah” direction from Bendis and painfully silly art from Bachalo. There’s nothing in this issue that makes me want to come back. I’ve seen worse but I’ve also seen alot better.
