Wow, what a bummer of an ending.  That’s all I can say without spoiling it.  It was good, but man does it hit you in the gut.  This story reminded me of something that you’d see on The Twilight Zone.  In fact, I guess in retrospect, you could probably say that about this whole first arc.  There are no super villains and the threat against The Authority is so big that they must make one of their infamous morally ambiguous decisions in order to survive.  And the ironic thing is that they will never know the true repercussions of the decision they made.  Even though they are definitely good stories, this is partially the reason I left The Authority to begin with.  Not only did they become too powerful once upon a time, but the level of arrogance really got to me.  If nothing else, this reminds me why I loved Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning’s run on The Authority: World’s End because it seems to have taught them better (but we’ll see if that sticks now that DnA have completed their run).

When we got the reveal at the end of last issue, I was afraid that they’d wrap it up too quickly.  But when I saw how they did it in this issue, I can see why Giffen didn’t want to drag the story on longer than this.  It really didn’t need to be longer.  Although, I know most people will argue we should have gotten a better first issue from Grant Morrison when he started this run in 2006, overall, I’d say a good story.  Although, it is a valid argument to want to know how we went from a “heroes in the real world concept” under Morrison to this “Twilight-zone concept” under Giffen.  However, now Giffen can start a fresh arc without the burden of continuing directly from Morrison’s first two issues.  I know he’s still got story ideas from Morrison for this series, but it’ll be interesting to see how he does an entire arc and what we’ll get next.
