The way I got into Astounding Wolf-man was the same way I got into Scalped… my local comic book shop made the trade half off. I loved the first trade, so much that I picked up the next arc in issues. Unfortunately the last couple of issues seemed to have the character in Limbo.
What made Wolf-man very interesting was not the fact that his life was ruined from the curse, but from his desire to be a hero. He lost his job, his money his house and became very close to loosing his wife. What also made Wolf-man interesting is that he can transform into a Wolf only at night, but on the night of a full moon he become the beast. This causes friction between him and his daughter.
After a climatic ending to the first arc where Wolf-man is accused of killing his wife, we spend the next six issues watching Wolf-man seeking out his master and learning how to utilize his new powers to kill Zechariah, the vampire that murdered his wife. The problem with this story is that it would have been better read in a trade or even a weekly mini series. The emotional drama he is supposed to go through is lost on a monthly book, that was built on action and even a little gore.
Finally after six issues where even I was considering dropping it, the Wolf-man is finally ready to fight. He is back in his hometown and he wants his revenge and with his return the book looks like its coming back to its former glory
While he is away, Zechariah has built his own crew of vampire superheroes, and Wolf-man’s daughter want to join them. The FBI is forming their own hit squad. Three super villains that Wolf-man put away just broke out and are hunting him. Plus to make matters worse the full moon is a few days away and Wolf man needs to find away to restrain himself before he loses control.
For the first time in a long time I can not wait for the next issue of Wolf-man. The character is done with his training and his whining and now is ready to fight back, but the odds are strongly stacked against him now.
