I think that’s a good way to look at it. I don’t think either of these alone is a good story, but together they’re kind of an apocalyptic free-jazz riff.
@ohcaroline:
Nice analogy. In the same way that Coltrane could turn spontaneous melodic eruptions into full compositions (like in the not-at-all-easy-listening albums Sun Ship and First Meditations), Ellis can turn brief ideas into fully realized stories.
Still, there’s a reason that nobody listens to free jazz for very long. Eventually, the meandering becomes tedious, and the brain cries out for structure.
The annoying part is that parts 1 & 2 obviously should have been one thirty-two page comic. The stories were still fucked-up awesome, though.
They could have packaged the whole thing together with the scripts as an $8 comic and marketed it to Ellis fans who might not have bothered with the main series. Or used the stories as backups in the regular issues and charged $3.99 for ’em. This just wasn’t very well-packaged. More interesting than not, though.
