First, let me say that I was a little pissed off when I flipped through this book before sitting down to read it. Only 16 pages of story and art followed by 16 pages of the script (of what I just read) and a few crappy thumbnail drawings for $3.99!?!?! WTF!?! But then I read it, and while neither of the stories blew me away I was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading the script. As a “look behind the curtain” kind of fan I was fascinated by the detail at which Warren Ellis described the visuals for the artists. In reading the script I also realized that I tend to read comics like short books these day and rarely take the time to give the art more than a glance. That being said I enjoyed going back and looking at the art closer to see the details that I missed before. Overall, the story was good and added a little bit extra to the mysterious ghost boxes but the real goods was in the actual script for me. The art on the other hand was split for me. The Alan Davis art (3/5) did nothing for me (not that it was bad, just not for me) while the Adi Granov art (5/5) was BEAUTIFUL in my opinion. It had a similar look and feel as Simone Bianchi (which I love on some panels and hate on others) but without all the (at times) awkward facial expressions and weird panel layouts. Plus the “muddy” coloring and inking style worked well with the steam punk X-Men (X Society). Although, I still don’t think this issue should have been $3.99 for what you get, it was an enjoyable story, especially for “process junkies” like me. Plus I loved the brooding “Batman-style” Wolverine cover by Bianchi. On a side note I hope if Marvel decides to replace or have a fill in for Bianchi on Astonishing they give the job to Granov.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good
