I opened the first page of this issue (digitally) and just kind of stared at the large initial panel in awe. You just don’t see such artistic expression in comics, and based on the strength of that single panel, I want to recommend this book to non-readers.

Johns is telling a fantastic personal story, and honestly, Arthur is one of my favorite characters out of the new 52. I love the little hints of backstory Johns drops for us and tantalizes us with hints of future storylines. I wasn’t around to read his original Green Lantern run in single issues, but I imagine this is sort of how it must have felt back then.

And there’s the trench. I’m filled with a serious sense of dread concerning what’s hidden down there. I generally feel uncomfortable with just the idea of swimming in a lake, so this deep-water stuff really has me on edge. Even so, I can’t wait to see what’s revealed next issue.

Story: 5 - Excellent
