“Aquaman” #1 was one of my favorite books from DC’s New 52. Issue #2 is fun and builds upon the first book but it lacks the pop I was hoping for. The story is strong enough although it does come across as a little contrived. The new threat is developed more and it looks like the stakes have been raised. But it almost feels like a traditional monster story that we’ve seen before.

Reis is one of my favorite artists but his work here didn’t live up to what I expected. I had trouble deciphering what was happening in the first few pages and there were a couple of character panels where the expressions were a little off. But Reis still manages to give the book a pretty solid look and it certainly doesn’t distract from the story.

“Aquaman” is still a solid book. This issue isn’t as strong as the first but it’s still a good read. I’m hoping the story opens up more instead of following a more conventional route. It’s certainly in capable hands and I trust Johns and Reis.
