Disappointing. I’m not sure Lemire can do comics storytelling. This freaking arc has gone on for so f’ing long…NOTHING happens.

It actually pisses me off…why the hell can’t they just tell the damn story? Instead of dragging it out ad infinitum.

  1. I tweeted this to DC earlier today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1YmS_VDvMY

  2. I think with the 20th installment of Prelude to Rotworld as well as his shitty CBS Saturday night drama re-imagining of Kid Eternity, people are finally starting to realize what I’ve been saying for the past 6 month, Lemire is not a good writer. One of the moderators said it very delicately in the POTW podcast, he’s a “simplifier.” He has one idea a year and he drags it out for 37 issues. Either that, or he makes hamfisted unsubtle references to other, better writers.

    • Well… His run on Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. was pretty darn good! But yes, that’s the exact reason why I dropped Animal-Man… It drags forever and nothing ever happens, or encounters get repeated ad nauseam.

    • Also Essex County has a pretty well written plot, and I don’t think that opinion is in the minority, given the praise it’s recieved.

    • Yeah, it’s kind of a disservice to good young writers like Lemire (and Snyder) to have had them praised SO MUCH in the past couple years. These guys are good, but after a while expectations are put up so damn high that it all has to come crashing down. I watched the same thing happen with Fraction a couple years ago.

Anyway, I’ve never read Essex County, but enjoyed the first couple arcs of Sweet Tooth quite a bit. Then it became apparent to me that, yeah, Lemire is not God and that his stories are simpler than they might first appear. And that would be fine if he was writing something fairly limited rather than doing long, long arcs and serialized sagas.

    • This issue was a let down for people who’ve read th series from issue 1, but to say nothing has happened in the other 11 is a bit unfair. I have been griped with every issue. It real feels like the decks are stacked against the Bakers and I worry they won’t all survive. If nothing else Buddy’s powers evolved in the last arc, and I thought the Jl- Dark crossover was fun.

Is any writer perfect? No. But Animal Man is the highest pulled book here everytime it comes out (beating Swamp Thing), so a few folks round here must really enjoy Lemire.

  3. You have to be able to just go with it to enjoy this. It’s fun that way. Once you start looking for a big picture, that is when the letdown occurs.

Plus the artwork is just brilliant
