Amidst all the great books that came out this week this was the one I was most excited (and scared) to read. I have never read anything by the writer (Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa) or the artist (Adam Pollina) so I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew was that Angel is one of my favorite characters and he has his own book now (for 5 issues at least).

This issue blew me away. The art was beautiful, striking and very stylized. In addition each page had a different and unique panel layout that only enhanced the art. The writing was also excellent, especially because for first issue I felt like a lot of things happened. As quickly as I had questions about what was going on there were answers but at the same time new questions entered their place. The story in general revolves around Warren Worthington III as a prep schooler who has started noticing changes in his body (and it’s not puberty). Tie that in with being on the track team, having a girlfriend, a jealous teammate and a mysterious religious figure and you have lots of places to go with the plot. Even though the book is $3.99 it is well worth the cover price for beautiful art and a great start of a story.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent
