I love Scott Snyder and “Survival of the Fittest” is a prime example why. Here he takes the overused subject of vampires, gives it a few twists, and delivers an inventive period story that I really enjoyed.

This is a 5 part mini tied into the popular “The American Vampire” series. This first issue starts with Felicia and the Vassals preparing to expose vampires secretly controlling the information flow in a large number of local newspapers. From there Snyder opens up his bigger vision for the story. It’s extremely well written and while based off of characters from the world of American Vampire, it’s very new reader friendly. Snyder’s story has a lot of potential and I’m excited about it.

Many people love Sean Murphy’s art but I’m not his biggest fan. I really like his environments but I find his characters are distracting. Their sketchy, scribbly look just doesn’t add much to the story for me. He is a talented artist but his chosen style for these characters wasn’t as effective as the environments he draws around them.

Even mith my mixed feeling about Murphy’s art, this is a great book. Snyder is very comfortable with this world and it shows here. I can’t want to see what the next issue brings.

Story: 5 - Excellent
