Seven issues in and this series continues to amaze. I’ll have to admit that the story was a little bit lackluster at the start, but it slowly built up some steam towards the end. This issue thickens the story as it is revealed that there is a group which is aware of the existence of vampires, a plot point which could potentially be expounded upon in the series. We are also treated with a background story on our new protagonist, Cashel McCogan, who bit by bit is becoming to be a very likable character in the American Vampire mythos, if not one already. There’s also an event at the latter part of the story which amped up my excitement for this book. It is undoubtedly a sign of a bloody fight coming. On the art side, Rafael Albuquerque is still nailing it. His style of a little rough art works well with the early 20th century setting, that makes you feel immersed in the story. It also perfectly captures the pulp/noir feel that the series portrays. Barring any jinxing from my acclaim, I’m confident this is a shoe-in for an Eisner award nomination next year.
