I have been hot and cold on Amazing Spider-man for a while. The weekly format of the book means that It is a serious commitment to pick up every issue. In addition, the quality of the book can vary significantly, depending on the creative team. After this issue, my position on this series is clear: when Joe Kelly is writing the story I'm on board. With all the different writers on Amazing Spider-man its hard to keep track of who is writing an individual issue or story arc. After the last Rhino issue, I realized that the issues I have liked the best were written by one man: Joe Kelly. Fortunately, this week's issue was written by Kelly and man was it good. I was a little nervous about Kelly revisiting the Rhino so soon after writing one of my favorite issues of Amazing Spider-man in a long time but he did not disappoint. ASM 625 is actually a continuation of ASM 617 and concludes a two part masterpiece where Kelly gives readers an honest and convincing justification for Rhino donning his suit once again. It is frustrating that so often when a writer wants to bring a character back he just brings him/her back, without providing a convincing explanation for doing so. Here Kelly puts the Original Rhino back in Spider-man's rogues gallery in a way that works on every level. Not only did Kelly re-establish the Rhino, he also handled Spider-man perfectly. The Spidy dialogue was sharp, the inclusion of MJ showed that when the chips are down Peter will always lean on MJ, and most importantly Kelly's story perfectly captured the essence of any great Spider-man story: no matter how hard Peter tries he can't save everyone all of the time and that kills him but he'll never stop trying. If you can't already tell, I love Kelly's work on ASM and can't wait until his next issue. Hands down the pick of the week.
