Alpha Flight has had more final issues than some books have had issues at all. But of the team’s many farewells, this is my favourite.
It didn’t surprise me, and it didn’t reinvent the wheel, but it delivered on what Pak, Van Lente and Eaglesham set out to do from issue No. 1: Breathe new life into the characters, and tell a great eight-issue miniseries from beginning to end.
If you read the last issue, you can guess what happens here: The Unity zombies are freed, the Master’s blasted to pieces, Alpha Flight are heroes again and the governor-general appoints opposition leader Not Tommy Douglas as the prime minister. (I know, I know: They never say what party he belongs to, but take a look at the Douglas hair and glasses, and the weirdly similar phrasing of his “turn our backs on hate” speech and Jack Layton’s deathbed letter. Then draw your own conclusions.)
It’s a tidy, tightly plotted conclusion, but there are just enough loose ends that I’m wistful for the kind of stories the Van EaglePak team could have told if this had continued as an ongoing. Heather’s off on her own with baby Claire, presumably as a fugitive for, you know, murdering scores of people. I would have loved to see them play around with that. Until now, I had been dismissive of the Mac-Heather relationship — historically, it’s been more interesting for me when one of them was dead than were both were alive — but Van EaglePak had me invested in this. For all the side-stories, this was more or less Mac and Heather’s story, and I’m sad I probably won’t see it continue.
So, it seems, are the creators. We get some really heartfelt farewell letters from all three of them — including a full page from Dale Eaglesham, who deservedly has the most to say, having done some magnificent work on this title. The detailed action, expressive character acting and dynamic layouts in this issue alone are just fantastic, and keep a clear and steady pace in what could otherwise be a really jumbled, channel-flipping conclusion to the story.
All three creators take time to profusely thank the fans for supporting them in this series. All I can say is: No, gentlemen, thank YOU.
Random observations:
1. I love that Alice Hu continues to broadcast her news report in the robot suit, to the extent that she needs someone else to hold the mic for her.
2. AlphaFlight.net fans: Is this the first time the website’s gotten a shout-out in the pages of a Marvel comic? In any case, profuse congratulations are in order.
3. The Master gets some goddamn chilling villain dialogue in this issue.
4. On the subject of loose ends: What happened to Wendigo? We didn’t see him go down in the last issue, and he’s not in this one. Did Sasquatch just kill him offscreen?
5. On the subject of Sasquatch: I don’t much care for “Squatch.” Makes him sound like a Pokemon.
6. “This is what democracy looks like.” Occupy the Yukon!

But who is joining X-Men? And what will the new book featuring the team be? Nice little cliffhanger in the written notes at the back. I am excited. I am getting most of the X-books.
