Alpha Flight gets a lot of second chances, and they deserve it. At its core, the team has a great mix of strong characters, but they've been put through the wringer of death, rebirth and retconning so many times that their reboot issues -- and we've seen a lot of those -- can seem really old hat.
This issue does not. Far from it.
When Fred Van Lente said he was bringing Alpha Flight back to its roots, he wasn't kidding; this story moves like a knife through butter to the heart of the characters, showing off their powers and explaining their relationships to one another -- and while he's at it, Van Lente manages to squeeze in a badass Purple Girl moment. Think about that. Purple Girl. I couldn't have even imagined the sentence "badass Purple Girl moment" until I read this, and when you read it, you'll know why.
The story couldn't have felt this dynamic without a stellar effort by Ben Oliver on art. Lots of bold, angled panel layouts and a really clean style. But just think: If the writing's this good for the regular book and it has Eaglesham art, it's really going to sizzle.
Stray observations:
1) I hope they're going to have a lot of fun with Marrina's new "screw you, Earthlings!" personality. It could also be a joke that gets old fast.
2) Judging by those campaign ads, Canada in the Marvel Universe had their election on the exact same day as real Canada. I wonder if things turned out just as well for Marvel Universe Jack Layton.
3) The fascist Canadian party's slogan is "just watch us," a reference to a famous quote by Pierre Trudeau. It's a clever homage to the Byrne run, which included Trudeau as a character and made the occasional jab at his administration's policies.
4) I know Gary Cody's a decades-old Marvel character, but he looks an awful lot like a real former MP, Garth Turner. (Come to think of it, he also looks like a brunette John Byrne.)
