Superman is dead. Long live Lex Luthor.
Honestly, I want to know who nixed the idea of Superman 2000? Who did it? Because you, sir, need a good caning. If this book was any indication of what Morrison and Waid planned, we all missed out on something spectacular. This book, top to bottom, has been stellar. Utterly. Stellar. This book always makes me happy. And this issue? One of the best.
As we open, Lex is due to be electrocuted for his crimes against humanity and Superman. And he DOES get electrocuted right in front of us. Aaaaaaand he's still alive. Yeah, you didn't actually think the greatest criminal mind of our time would REALLY let himself die at the hands of pedestrian swine, did you? Pft! No, Lex has ingested a serum similar to the one given to Lois in issues 2 and 3 that grants him 24-hour powers. Of course, Lex thinks HE'S the only one who could make one, which only serves to push the irony further. After a trip to his secret lair under his prison to grab Nasthalthia (his favorite sociopathic niece), Lex makes his escape in time to greet his new partner in crime, Solaris the Tyrant Sun. Lex here is just spot on, from his "stinks of the irrational" comment to his just bombastic arrogance. I hope Morrison gets a few more shots to feature him because his Lex is just too perfect not to be seen again.
Meanwhile, Superman's in the final stages of his solar cancer, so much that he needs to don a new solar energy suit as he rushes off to face Solaris. Naturally, Superman isn't alone as the Fortress robots and even Clark's pet Sun-Eater returns to help their master at the cost of their lives. Eventually, Solaris is so weakened, he crashes to Earth, at Superman's mercy. After a final blow, Solaris is near inert and Superman is gone, leaving only his tattered new costume behind. I'm going to miss Morrison's Superman. He's just so terrific for the character.
Later, Clark runs frantically into the office to hand in the "Superman Dead" headline before he collapses dead a la Pheidippides on the spot. Just as everyone encircles the poor reporter, the wall crashes through, revealing a super-powered Lex, ready for destruction. It's an ending that leave you wanting the last issue now. You need to know how this is going to end. It's just a great cliffhanger.
Out of the three Morrison books DC released this week, this was undoubtedly head and shoulders above the rest. This was near flawless. Superman was spot-on. Lex was spot-on. The action was great. The character moments were wonderful. Even bit player Nasthalthia was enjoyable. Barring that... unfortunately positioned scene with Superman spraying down the Gravity Stable, Quitely's art shined like always. There's really just no complaints about this issue that could hamper my enjoyment. Five stars all around.
