It was only a matter of time before the reality-bending members of the original X-Men attracted attention beyond the walls of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. In the latest issue of All New X-Men, the team runs into the Avengers and gets a stark reminder of the situation they're facing. In reading this issue, I felt like the Warren of the past represented and spoke for me. While present day Warren soared through the air, past Warren urged his future self to slow down and explain what's going on. When the pairs conversation was interrupted by the arrival of Hydra, I shared the younger Warren's frustration. As a new reader to the X-Men franchise, I don't know what happened to Warren to transform him into Angel and what the significance of his new appearance is. Based on the way that the issue ends, I'd guess that young Warren won't be resolving this mystery himself for at least a little while longer. The contrast between the two incarnations of Angel is brilliantly depicted in the double-page spread of both Angel's swooping around Avengers Tower. On the left, Warren of the past struggles to dodge a hail of laser fire while on the right Warren of the present leaves a trail of broken henchman tumbling behind him. The artwork in this book has consistently been a joy to look at, with colours that pop off the page and an emotive range of expressions - particularly on the craggy face of Bobby Drake. In spite of the multitude of explosions going off around Avengers Tower, there's never a sense that Hydra is a real threat. Hydra arrived with the best intentions of being a formidable foe, but they're no match for two X-Men. When the Avengers do return, all that's left to do is have Hulk tidy up the mangled bodies. Although they're featured on the cover, the Avengers involved in this issue is limited and feels as if it's been slightly oversold. How do the Avengers react to the time-swept X-Men? With mild confusion. Captain America travels to the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning to get an update on what the situation with the X-Men is, but is only viewed from a distance. The banter between Kitty and Bobby as they act out the off-panel conversation between Captain America and Beast was one of the highlights of the issue for me. It's a great way of avoiding some potentially weighty exposition, as it gives Beast the time to deliver necessary information to the Avengers, without forcing the reader to tread over the same information themselves. In it's final pages, All New X-Men #8 shifts to a darker tone, reminding us that the presence of the time-swept X-Men in the present day is no laughing matter. As young Warren attempts to travel back to the future, Jean Grey - absent from the issue until this point - steps into the room and performs what I can only think to describe as a psychic hard reboot on Warren. His hysteria and panic vanish in an instant. Still coming to terms with his psychic abilities, Jean cuts an imposing and even ominous figure as she stands before the assembled X-Men and declares that she is "in total control." Is it just me, or does anyone else have a bad feeling about this?
