Jiminez comes on and immediately ups the quality all around. I don't
know what pressure the artists are exerting on Levitz in regards to
things like dialog and concept generation, but I was extremely impressed
with the details of this issue, just as I was with the Legion Annual
last week. The elucidation of life in the future (little, subtle touches
like ' before my perishable dna sample degrades and my ship locks
down', the mirrorkins, etc), the really nuanced character work, and
finally a lyricism that has been missing from a lot of Levitz's more
recent stuff. I'm very grateful. The art, it goes without saying, is
beautiful. I don't know, it looks infinitely better than what he was
putting out at Marvel, and I don't know why that is exactly. Perhaps
he's just gone to town more with the settings, and the costuming, I
don't know. It's clear that he's got much more affection for the DCU,
or at least this aspect of the DCU, than anything he was doing at
Marvel. Was Lanning inking all his work there? That could be the tipping
point.
Anyway, it's all glorious, and if they get Giffen as the regular artist on the main book, this will probably be the first time that my fondest creative team wishes line up for one of my favorite franchises. Awesome stuff.
Getting back on topic, this is easily the best looking book this week. Easily. Pick it up for the art alone, because it's really a masterpiece in that regard. But also pick it up for some of Levitz's best, most nuanced, most creative writing in a while. The plot itself is fairly straightforward, but all the touches make this something special.
