Hmmm….I’m not quite sure how to feel about this issue.  On one hand, it continues the foundation laid out by Cornell in his previous storyline, and while I’m not the hugest Doomsday fan, I still find the characters in an interesting place.  I was intrigued in #900 by how the characters would solve the problem and face the enemy, and here we see a glimpse of how they would deal with it.  Add a cool villain to it, and I’m intrigued.  Also, this issue features some great artwork by Kenneth Rocafort, who is a great talent and really impressed me a few years ago with his work on Madame Mirage.  On the other hand, the story is still about Doomsday, and I get the feeling the Cornell doesn’t quite know what to do with him.  I felt like the story moved at too quick of a pace with very little insight as to what is really going on.  Maybe it was a device to help build tension or to bring the reality of facing such a dangerous enemy, but it just didn’t quite work for me.  It sort of felt like Cornell tapping into his Grant Morrison muscles but not flexing them in the right way.  I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the dramatic art shift that happens in the middle of the issue.  Jesus Merino, who is an excellent artist in his own right, steps in for some pages and the stylistic change is jarring.  His style just doesn’t mesh with Rocafort’s, and it’s a real distraction to the storytelling.  Overall, I’m going to stick with Cornell on this one.  It looks like next issue will see us return to Earth, which may allow the story to gain some focus and worry less about impressive sci-fi inspired tech and jargon.
