In the space of six issues, Action Comics has gone from being one of the best books of the DC relaunch to being pretty much a mess. How bad was this issue? I didn’t even finish reading it, that’s how bad.
I’m giving this three stars because of some fairly decent artwork by Kubert, but really that’s a generous grading. Grant Morrison has always been a writer whose work varies wildly in quality, but I’m afraid this is far from his best. Sometimes it just feels like his brain is exploding with too many ideas, and in trying to cram them all into 20 pages a month, he ends up doing them a great disservice, never allowing them to fully develop. The first issue of this series was strong because it was simple, direct and powerful. Each issue thereafter has become increasingly more convoluted and scattershot, to the point where I don’t really know what’s going on any more, and frankly I don’t really care.
One of my resolutions this year is to reduce my pull list by getting rid of any books I’m buying regularly as soon as they fall to a three-star level. I have to say, it’s almost a relief to cut Action Comics loose. It feels like a waste of time as well as money at this point.

Story: 1 - Poor
Art: 3 - Good

  1. I couldn’t agree more. Morrison killed this book and somehow DC let him do it. What a shame.

  2. God. It’s been brutal. I felt like I’d been robbed at gun point after issue #5, and called it quits. $4 for the same Superman origin story that we’ve all read at least a dozen times? At this point, they’ve faltered so badly, I don’t know if they can recover before squandering all of the good will they generated with the relaunch. So sad. I was truly excited to have a good monthly Superman book.

  3. I thought the idea of evil villains hiding in Supermans head was pretty cool.

  4. You are all very wrong. I shared the opinion of @glcfarmboy, until I thought to reread the series. If you can find the time, I’d highly recommend it. It makes the experience so much richer!

    • This was my very first issue and I totally enjoyed it ,didn’t even read five (#5).
Me confused? Nah, not one bit.
