This issue was like a poem for me and I mean that in the best possible way. It was very lyrical and emotional, but still a superhero comic. This was truly a love letter to longstanding elements of Superman’s continuity presented in a manner that gave them fresh life. Phantom Zone, Kryptonian criminals, Fortress of Solitude, Krypto. I think most writers would not be able to rise above these hoary old plot widgets, but both Morrison and Fisch (in the backup) do. Focusing on the idea of the beloved pet is what makes it universal and so effective. Travel Foreman’s art was breathtaking and the perfect companion to Morrison’s story.
