This book snuck under my radar somewhat, as I only dip my toe in the Hellboy universe occasionally now, preferring to slowly collect the gorgeous library editions. Still I am a sucker for one shots and thought I'd give it a look. I was very glad I did. This is a lovely little stand alone story, kind of perfect for Halloween weekend. Arcudi tells a simple story of a small town haunting and the people left behind after a tragedy strikes. In all honesty the "twist" in the story is probably fairly obvious from several pages away, but that was not important to me and nor do I think it was intended to be. For me this was a comic filled with atmosphere and quiet emotion, which was unexpected but welcome just the same. There's some beautiful art which reminded me ever so much of Michael Gaydos (which is to say a good thing!). Abe Sapien is a favourite character of mine and it was nice to see him in a straight up paranormal investigation story, which had absolutely nothing to do with his origins and all the rest of the background stuff. You didn't really have to know much about him at all, because this was an excellently constructed and haunting little tale, beholden to nothing else and for this reader at least, a real treat.
