This is one of the trippiest comics that I have read in a long time, and that’s a good thing. Not all of the team-ups in this title have been effective, but a number of them have been inspired, and have led to memorable stories. So far, all of the narratives have been one shots, or more accurately, half shots, in that each story takes up only half an issue. I think Marvel should consider allowing some of these stories to run for more than one issue, half a comic at a time. That way, some interesting ideas could be fleshed out into more epic storylines. In this comic, the team-up between Black Widow and Fantomex is good, but rather predictable. The two heroes are both trying to end a Russian gene experimentation program that is designed to produce super humans. That both characters would be offended by this program is not surprising. The real gem here is the Scarlet Witch/Domino team-up. The two probability altering heroes are trying to disable a probability altering Celestial drone gone rogue that is set to destroy life on earth. The writer of this section, Adam Warren, has set up an imaginative sci-fi concept that is really quite complex and interesting. He writes that the drone works by “triggering extinction-level events with macro-scale probability manipulation fields.” I had to read that line several times before its meaning became clear to me. Warren then shows that many alternate attempts to destroy the drone are possible, with almost all of them ending in disaster. LUCKILY, Domino is inspired to try the one approach that succeeds. This story plays with probability and alternate realities in a way that suits the two characters wonderfully. By the way, in this comic, Wanda flies for the first time since a team-up with Spider-Man decades ago. That time it was explained away as being through the use of a mechanical device. I think it’s fine that the Scarlet Witch can now fly, given the nature of her powers, and the fact that she has been refining her control of those powers over the years. Perhaps future writers will decide to put limitations on the flying powers, since flying no doubt requires a great deal of concentration on her part. I give the first story, written by B. Clay Moore and penciled by Kris Anka an overall three. Anka’s art is clean and crisp, although not revelatory. Adam Warren both writes and draws the Scarlet Witch/Domino tale which I give an overall five. Warren’s writing is stronger than his art, with his cute, manga style faces not really expressing the gravity of the plot.
