I suppose that I should have chosen a different book considering last week’s Pick of the Week by Ron, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1 was just too good to ignore.

Nobody writes awkward teenage superhero romance like Brian Michael Bendis and this issue has it in spades as the recently heartbroken Kitty Pryde goes on a uniquely superhero date with the recently heartbroken Peter Parker. It’s fun to watch them dance around each other, seemingly trying to decide what it is exactly they are doing — are they friends? Is it a date? In the “proper” Marvel Universe, their worlds are so insular so it probably never occurred to anyone before, but here in the Ultimate Universe Kitty Pryde and Spider-Man seem like a perfect, logical match. I hope this isn’t just a one time Annual thing, even though I suspect it probably is.

Ron touched on this last week, but it bears repeating: remember when Annuals were good? Remember when the Annual storyline was the major event of the year (for both big superhero companies), the one that everyone looked forward to and talked about all summer? Yeah, those were good times and I miss them. Of course, success can be its own worst enemy and every year there was an attempt to top the previous year’s Annual story which only lead to into realms of ridiculousness which turned the Annuals into a joke. It got so bad that they still have the stink of death on them.

So far so good for this Ultimate Annual experiment. They haven’t done it with universe-spanning cosmic wars, rather they’ve done it with smallish character pieces that after two issues have been way more satisfying than the entirety of War of the Gods.

Or maybe I’m just a big ol’ softy because it’s iFanboy wedding season again…
