Has there ever been a more predictable Pick of the Week? I mean, talk about an anti-climax, but this was about as no-brainer as one can get. When I was discussing this weeks books with the guys I made a joke that I had so many books to read that I was just going to make the first book I read the Pick and get it over with. And lo’ and behold, the first book was the Pick.

You have no idea how much I wanted to pick Jonah Hex or Criminal or The Mighty Avengers or Ultimate Spider-Man, just to see what kind of riot would erupt in the comments. All three of those books were fantastic and POW-worthy and in any other week they might have been the best of the bunch. But not this week.

I have to start by saying that the events that transpire in this issue were not a surprise, mostly because I don’t live under a rock and co-workers, the newspaper, CNN, yahoo.com, Newsarama, and just about everywhere else conspired to let me in on the big news before I was able to read my comics. At first I was really annoyed but what can you do? I did spend a good portion of the morning feeling like Luke Skywalker, slumped over the gaming table in the Millennium Falcon after watching Old Ben get cut down by Darth Vader. “I can’t believe he’s gone.” Everyone knows that I’m a Batman guy, but my favorite Marvel character is and always has been Captain America, by leaps and bounds.

And now I am one conflicted dude. I am not entirely happy with the fact that Marvel has seen fit to kill off my only real emotional connection to their universe, but at the same time it was so well done and it sets up so many intriguing plot lines that my head and my heart are locked in battle. How can I not trust Ed Brubaker, probably the best writer going in comics right now? How can I not trust Joe Quesada, an Editor-in-Chief who succeeded in doing something I had thought impossible, he made me care about the Marvel Universe again.

Here’s the thing — I don’t think he’s dead. I don’t believe that Steve Rogers is really dead. To quote a great miracle worker, there’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. And I don’t believe he’s all dead. Not in a world with Sorcerer Supremes and where Captain America breathes his final breath off-panel. I just don’t buy it.

But for the moment let’s assume he’s gone. Where does that leave us? Well, the best book that Marvel was putting out no longer has a main character — in fact, it hasn’t really had a main character since Civil War began — so that sucks. Is the new Captain America going to be The Punisher? Winter Soldier? I suspect it will be The Punisher at first and then once that disaster unfolds, Winter Soldier will take up the mantle. Or perhaps there will be a whole string of Captain Americas, multiple people donning the red, white and blue suit (or a variation thereof) to shove it in Tony Stark’s face. I hope so.

Where does that leave me? I honestly don’t know. This development has already soured me a bit on the world of Marvel. Civil War: The Initiative was the first casualty of my bitterness. I was going to buy it and then I wasn’t and then I was again but I didn’t, in honor of Cap. I will stick with Captain America as long as Brubaker is on the book. Beyond that, I don’t know. We all know he’ll be back, right? At some dramatic moment when all hope seems lost it will be revealed that he never died in the hospital, that Nick Fury was thinking 19 steps ahead of everyone and got Steve out and replaced him with a fake or that Doctor Strange or some other mystic brought him back from the other side, or something appropriately comic booky will happen and Steve Rogers will make his triumphant return. I know in my head that that is what is going to happen, I just don’t think that, right now, my heart understands.

Hell, I made it through an entire year of Jean-Paul Valley as an armor-wearing Batman, I can make it through this. Right? Right…?

Comments

  1. Best comment on Captain America’s death…

    Punchy (Newsarama boards)
At least now he has a good excuse to not be on myspace.

  2. I’d love to see Punisher as cap run amok and have bucky take him out and then take up the mantel, that would be interesting….

  3. I’m right there with you. This was something special. It was my choice as well. Review of it, others, and the rest of my crazy nonsense are here:
    http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4529

  4. C’mon! How can you pick Cap’s leave of absence… oh, wait, I mean “death”, in place of “Mighty Avengers”?

  5. Connor, I feel your sense of awe. It was surprising. And i and everyone on the board seem to think that eventually a normal comic book scenario will bring him back, but who knows. Good choice,i know it was hard because so many books were good this week.

  6. Just to get out there; I am not a Captain America guy. Sure it’s cool to see Cap smash his shield into Dr. Doom’s face and all that. Yet as a character he always felt a bit…well, dull.

But Brubaker writing Cap? The book has been terrific throughout his run. Cap #25 would not have been as affecting had it not been for depth of character Brubaker has given Captain America during this run.

Brubaker told the story in such a tasteful and masterful way it never felt like just a stunt to drum up sales. The final reveal as to who the shooter is wasn’t shocking so much as it was heartbreaking.

  7. This issue was good, but seriously. Marvel is pretty much my anus now for killing Cap.

ANYWAY, I thought Mighty Avengers was a far better issue than this.

But JLA or SiP is going to be my pick

  8. Been waiting all night to sing my sad song to all iFanboys. Did anyone else have their whole town sell out of Cap #25 before they made their regular stop to the comic shop?
Yep, that was my reality when I strolled on over after the usual day of teaching English to the young ones at the local high school, and before I went to my grad class. Normal Wednesday for me, not for the rest of the world apparently. Feeling the pain of missing a HUGE day in comic fandom, and it’s one of my regular title, too. Sux.
I’m pretty pissed at Marvel screwin’ for my local shops by not giving them a heads up, and also “Tucson investor guy” that bought 25 copies in order to put his kids through college. Moron.
Anyone know where I can find an issue that fell off the truck? RIP Steve Rogers, oh how you would have loved NASCAR.

  9. The final reveal as to who the shooter is wasn’t shocking so much as it was heartbreaking.

You’re totally right about that. I knew that it was Sharon because his Wiki entry changed last night with the details. I kept reading to the last pages hoping that it was wrong, that it wasn’t her. When they did it, it tore me apart.

  10. Soooo, I spent my weekend catching up on my Captain America books (I was finally able to track down all the issues of Brubaker’s run), which meant I was stoked for the Cap to return after his Civil War stint. And what do they do? They kill him! Freakin’ great.

I have fallen in love with this character over the past few months and now he’s gone. It sucks donkey balls, and while the comic book nerd in me knows he’ll be back, I almost wish they hadn’t done it.

…BUT it does open the doors for more interesting stories and Brubaker is so very badass that I know it will all be okay. I’m right with Conner on his review. It was a great book, and that final shot of him with his one eye exposed and his hand hanging off the gurney…man, that was one tough image to look at.

All in all, I’m in total agreement with the pick of the week, even though I have yet to acknowledge it being reality.

  11. Anyone know where I can find an issue that fell off the truck?

    They’ll get posted online tomorrow.

  12. Oops! Conor I totally just looked back at my post and I spelled your name wrong. Apologies, apologies!

  13. Great pick Cononr, you did the right thing.

  14. my faith in IFANBOy is now restored i told my buddy this is the week well see if ill ever listen to that podcast again and they pulled this book was the best of the week for sure

  15. Cononr

    That’s a new one.

  16. Sold out at Meltdown in LA by 10AM. Guy at the counter said people were buying fistfuls of the issue, before they put a stop to that sort of thing.

    Stupid Marvel mainstream press release.

  17. people are such dildos
they don’t realize that issues that have a 100k+ press run and more publicity than Jesus are going to be in abundance and well cared-for?

Your Cap 25 will sell for $2 in five years. You may get 5 or 6 now, but mark my words….

  18. What a day! A comic with a variant cover comes out at 11:00, is sold out at 12:00, and is on eBay for $75 by the end of the day. And it’s a good book!

Probably the best book, yes, though the Mighty Avengers was as much fun as Cap was… the non-fun, intense thing it was. I felt like I got my money’s worth out of everything this week. (I dropped Uncanny.)

I have to admit, after I saw the AP story about Cap I was sort of hoping you’d pick Nightwing.

  19. I have to admit, after I saw the AP story about Cap I was sort of hoping you’d pick Nightwing

    NERD RIIIOOOOOTTTT

  20. seriously guys, nightwing was really good…

  21. I can’t believe 15 people are even bidding on it! I would say Conor was rubbing salt in me wounds but thanks to ol’ bittorrent Cap is getting shot on my computer screen as we type.

  22. Shit, if I didn’t need my copy for the podcast, I’d throw it up there right now.

  23. I didn’t have the money for my books today (paycheck tomorrow). If I had, then CNN.COM wouldn’t have fricken spoiled Captain America for me. And now I hear it’s sold out everywhere and selling on eBay for 85 bucks?

    I’m boned.

  24. “Shit, if I didn’t need my copy for the podcast, I’d throw it up there right now.”

I know! All I can think is “I had both covers in my hand! I could be some dumb guy’s karma even as we speak!”

  25. Oh, and finishing all the post-Civil War books only to find a “Join Up with the Army!” ad on the back cover seemed just right somehow.

  26. I had amazingly avoided spoilers the entire day, and then when I got to the LCS it had sold out (my copy was safe due to the pull-list feature, whew!). But, you could guess from the selling-out what had happened in the issue.

Of course, I’m dubious this lasts even a year, but it is quite a story.
The reveal of the killer was heart-breaking. It was a really well-done death. It felt senseless and anti-climatic, coming on the heels of the big event. Doesn’t that kind of seem like how it should feel?

  27. I liked this issue alot and Cap is one of my favorite characters, I too trust Bru to make the right moves as the rest of the book moves forward with out Rogers.

My hope is that with doing this, he’ll be gone for a while, if they bring him back, even three years from now, it’d feel cheap. I love Rogers, but a Marvel U without him will be interesting.

It makes me think of what that “Steve Rogers: Iron Man” thing was though….

  28. My store was sold out of both Cap and Nightwing so I haven’t read either.

However, I feel the loss of Cap nonetheless. I have to agree with you on this, Connor. The feeling of remorse and yet still knowing that he’s going to come back.

Oh and awesome Princess Bride reference.

  29. My shop ordered 2 copies of cap and both were sold out long before I was there, so ended up grabbing an issue that fell off a truck, and I’m going to just pick up the arc in trade. which BLOWS because I was planning to stop reading the trades and start picking up issues with this one. Fuck

  30. Man, what a great week of books. My socks were knocked off thoroughly. Usually I read a few books each night, but I was on such a roll that I read most of my stack.

I dug Captain America #25 and all, but my absolute favorite book was Mighty Avengers #1. I honestly can’t think of the last time I had that much fun with a super hero book. I had a huge smile on my face the whole time I was reading it. Bendis is so goddamn good it makes me sick. The dialogue was excellent (especially so for Bendis) and though it covered up some of the beautiful art, Bendis knew how to reel back for the big action sequences that were mostly silent. I loved his use of captions, too. I think that alone made the exchanges between Iron Man and Ms. Marvel a lot more enjoyable to read. And Frank Cho… man, he’s an artist to admire. Those huge full page spreads were just so beautiful. If this is what I have to look forward to every issue (minus fill-ins by whats his face), I will be a happy man.

I honestly think Captain America #25 would’ve had a bigger impact on me if I hadn’t known about the revelation beforehand. I still pored over the pages and admired Brubaker’s deft hand at work, but I didn’t get to have that “oh shit” moment the book would have created if I hadn’t known anything. It tugged at my heart strings in a few spots, but it could’ve done a lot more.

Ah, well. I still enjoyed the book a lot, and I think it opens up a lot of cool story ideas.

    My Prediction for Captain America:
Bucky will take up Captain America mantle for a while. after all, I think he embodies the current American mindset more than Steve Rogers does; there’s one point of dialogue when Crossbones says something like, “You think you’re a good guy now?” and Bucky retorts, “Not exactly.” The badassery quotient of that comment aside, I think it kinda speaks to what the American spirit is like nowadays. I love Steve Rogers, but a new take on the character would be awesome. Bucky as Cap would be mistrusting, skeptical, dark, and pessimistic… Steve Rogers was all those things, but the tone with Bucky is much different. It’s like taking away boy scout image of Captain America and leaving everything else, including that old American that Bucky once had.

And Steve Rogers is totally Ronin; I have a hard time disbelieving that right now. And Punisher will try to take up the Captain American mantle for a while (though key word is try)… so many cool possibilities.

Civil War may have been a mess, but this is hands down one of the most interesting things to come out of it.

  31. I might’ve avoided spoilers if my father hadn’t called me and asked me what if I knew what was going on. Ah well.

So, when I went to buy my weekly books, I found out it was sold out everywhere in L.A. That kind of annoyed me. Hopefully, I can snag one next week.

Regardless, though, my POW would be Mighty Avengers #1, Though Jeff Smith’s Shazam! was a close second.

  32. Ok….have not read the book. Will not read the book until i get to germany from kuwait, because of corporate firewall, and my subscribtion service delivers to my parents house.

Now, i want you to picture something – I am working nipple deep in troubleshooting a bad VPN connection, and on the phone is my boss, who knows i am a comic geek says- Oh, did you know they killed Captain America?

WTF!?! So now I have to wonder how cap dies, who killed him, and a bad VPN connection. I come here first, and get some spoilers, and then i go to wiki and it says…

While entering a Federal Courthouse, Steve Rogers is shot in the shoulder by a sniper. In the ensuing crowd chaos, he is shot three times in the stomach and chest with a handgun, and later appears to die of his injuries.[39] It is later revealed that the plan was orchestrated by the Red Skull; the sniper was Crossbones, and Sharon Carter, under a hypnotic suggestion by Dr. Faustus, was the person who had shot Rogers in the stomach.

In Civil War: The Initiative, Ms. Marvel tells Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) that Captain America is not dead but “…tucked away safe on the Raft…” with doctors working to save him.

SO now…I have to find out from a non geek he is dead, and then he is not dead?

Emotional turbulence. Plus, now i am pissed because he is not dead. I feel like Marvel faked an orgasm.

    AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

and what really sucks, is I will still keep reading. Like an wife who gets slapped, and still loves the bastard.

“No…don;t you take my publishing company to jail, I love him, you hear! I got these here bruises fallin down the steps in my trailer.”

    End rant.

  33. Comic book newb here, but I thought I’d quickly thank iFanboy and offer my 2 cents on the POTW.

Thanks particularly to Josh who convinced me to buy Criminal #1 in Episode 3 of the video podcast (which I stumbled upon being a big diggnation fan). Never really got the whole comics thing (other than the big “graphic novels” Watchmen, Maus, etc..) but after buying the early issues of Criminal and tracking down some BKV trades, I’m hooked. I’m now buying everything Brubaker I can get my hands on and loving it…

Captain America has definitely surprised me, after my preliminary complacency about over blown America patriotism (I’m an Aussie) subsided I was hooked. CA #25 we having me buying everything Brubaker for a while to come.

So thanks guys and keep up the good work….

Side note: I also enjoyed Dynamo 5 #1 by Jay Faeberer, especially since I’m a newb and didn’t have to worry about continuity and figuring out who ppl were…

  34. I haven’t gotten my books yet, so I’ll refrain from expressing my distaste at Cap’s death.

Was Ares pretty cool in Mighty Avengers?

  35. Bru did a great job on this book i feel this one issue had more plot, intrigue & heart than all of civil war! & from what ive heard this was Bru’s plan all along civil war or not, it was a planned storyline…. the initiative & mighty averngers.. well M.A. was good & the other was just filler. but damn!! tony stark is still a major major douche!! at this point the war profiter is unredemable.

SIP was good but damn the ending was heart breaking the look on francines face almost had me in tears. terry moore rocks soo hard!!
52 was just damn! as it winds down, it picks up & damn its getting good!
    lotta good books this week!

  36. heh heh that was a lot of damns!! 😛

  37. While I thought Civil War: The Initiative was cool, I felt a little ripped off. $5 for something that was essentially Marvel’s version of Countdown to Infinite Crisis and Brave New World. That thing should have been a buck!

  38. Fantastic week: five books into my stack and everything has been great. After Cap, I thought it would be hard to break outta my emotional punch-drunken-ness, but then we had: Leo revealing his real inner self in Criminal and Black Adam finally regaining that same kinda attitude in 52, while the Hulk embraced peace (at least for a little while) and thought balloons and the Mole Man returned to NYC. This has been one of those Weeks That Remind Me Why I Read Comics.

  39. Am I the only one that read the Ms. Marvel and Spider-Woman exchange in Civil War: The Initiative? I mean, ummm, well I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.

May I say the mantle of Captain America transferring from character to character would be an idea that is a hundred times better the New Warrior/rebels. Damn, can you imagine the scene where Iron Man (in his new red and yellow hellicarrier) get intellegence on a Captain America kicking the Vulture’s ass? Then a Captain America saving fire fighters in a chemical plant. Then a Captain America clearing out a Hydra cell. A Captain America bringing a kitten out of a tree.

  40. Am I the only one that read the Ms. Marvel and Spider-Woman exchange in Civil War: The Initiative?

If you look at the CBR article Ron linked to in the new thread, Quesada explains the exchange. But it is a MASSIVE spoiler, so be careful.

  41. Yeah, I just read that.

    No more Cap?

  42. I hope that maybe we get a little reformation in Frank Castle? Just a thought.

I haven’t picked up my books yet. I hope they still have a copy when I get there this afternoon.

  43. God, how many issues of War Journal am I going to have to buy now?

  44. This, if I do say so myself, was an amazing week in comic books
Cap… what more can be said that hasn’t been said already? In this issue I picked up another monthly series (which my wallet hates but I love)

Criminal was an AMAZING ending, and I can’t wait for the Lawless arc in May

I finally figured out JLA I think… since Metlzer’s a writer, he writes all of his comic books like novels. THus, all of the story arcs are really long and nothing really happens until near the end of them. That being said, I really liked this issue (something actually happened), and I coulda done without the ripping off of the arm, but whatever. And was there any point to having Vixen in this arc? I mean, after the second issue (when she got knocked down) she didn’t really do anything except fly around and remember her name. All in all, looking forward to the next one (provided Red Tornado isn’t the focus anymore)

52 was good as usual. Was it just me, or did this seem to finish a lot faster than usual?

    That’s all folks…

  45. My store put the variant Ed McGuiness cover in my bag, which is going on ebay for $40. It with the regular cover is going for over $100. Would it sully the character and the hobby I enjoy so much to cash in on this? I don’t think I’ve ever sold any of my comics. I am more likely to give comics to people than I am to sell any. I could get some of those trades I have been wanting to read.

  46. I was able to grab 1 copy of the McGuiness variant cover of Captain America yesterday. My regular shop was sold out and I ran to his competitor at 5:15 just before they sold out.

If anyone has a copy of the Epting “civil war epilogue” cover they are willing to trade for the McGuiness email me. I’d rather have the other cover. No Tony Stark-ish war profiteering here, straight up trade!

  47. Here’s a thought, this is of coruse me speculating and playing Mel Gib…I mean Consperacy Theroy

WE all saw the photo of the red, white and blue Iron Man suit. And the book was called “Iron Man: Steve Rogers.” Now, does everyone remember why Tony became obsessed with his original Iron Man suit? Because it kept him alive. Anyone following me on this one?

Maybe he’s not dead, and Tony is giving him (Or making, whatever) a suit. Yeah Civil War happend, but I can’t believe he’ll let Steve just die (If he is dead and not dying)

Also I don’t think Steve Rogers is Ronin, two reasons. A) This new Ronin is good with a sword. B) There’s a line where he say “Yo, Cage” can’t imagine seeing Cap say “Yo”

    My bet’s on Blade.

  48. Well, as somebody with no access at the moment to monthly issues here in Tokyo, all I can say to people who did not get their copy of Captain America is: I feel your pain, welcome to my world.

What I think is a bit sad is that many true Cap fans will not get their issues because so many non fans and “rubber neckers” are no doubt grabbing them off the shelves, and just because they saw something on Yahoo or whatever.

As for this being a POW – Yes. BECAUSE there is so much attention from people who don’t read comics, what we really need now is comment from people who actually know what they are talking about on the iFanboy podcast, even if Shazam #2 and many other worthy titles get overlooked in the media blitz.

And then we can all move on… I think how long Captain America stays dead will be ENTIRELY dictated by sales (more’s the pity); as soon as sales dip below just before pre CW levels, then POP, there he is, back again. Again, more’s the pity.

  49. “WE all saw the photo of the red, white and blue Iron Man suit. And the book was called “Iron Man: Steve Rogers.””

I do remember that, although the photo in question was just the cover of this week’s “Initiative” recolored in a way to inflame people. Which, you know… done deal.

  50. So I didn’t have a chance to read this because I never have time to get my books on Wed. and of course since I didn’t know by noon Wed. it was bound to be ruined. “Hey Ryan, did you hear Captain America died?”…”Ummm, no, but thanks for filling me in.”

I managed to avoid it all on the internet but I guess “friends” wanted to console me about the death I didn’t even know had happened yet.

  51. What I think is a bit sad is that many true Cap fans will not get their issues because so many non fans and “rubber neckers” are no doubt grabbing them off the shelves, and just because they saw something on Yahoo or whatever.

The regular readers will survive. But if they don’t pull in more readers, the industry won’t, so I see why you could be annoyed, but at the same time, it can only be a good thing that people are checking it out. If a shop owner isn’t pressing Winter Soldier into people’s hands when they come in, they’re blowing it.

  52. Well there was only three copies of the variant cover in my store of Captain America so I bought them.

My dad though is in Montreal at the moment so me being in Europe I asked him to get a load of copies for eBay.

Now my dad doesn’t read that many superhero books, I have hooked him on last man and fables and civil war an such but he really doesn’t have that much experience in the comic book world and as he’s a new reader which is what Marvel wants from this event I found his story of trying to get the books from the store interesting.

This is what he told me in an e-mail he sent me-

“I went to the store and ask and the guy says, french canadian dude, no he’s sold out, and he’s talking intensely to this other guy about the civil war and what’s happening like it’s some world event, the latest news that’s going to affect us all…

so I go to the back to find other stuff for you and there are a dozen captain america, differentcovers,so I pick them up and when I go to thefront, the guy says, “did you pick up the captain america’s in the back” and I say “yes” and he says reallly really pissed “I told you we were sold out! You can’t touch those!”…

so I say sorry, etc. but he was really steamed, when I went to pay he’d calmed down and told me he set those aside for his regular customers and that people had been calling him all day about it, he was sorry, they may reissue it next week and I can get a copy then…

whcih gets me pissed off because he was open late last night and I meant to go but it was so damn cold, but had I gone last night, this guy would have been none the wiser and I could have gotten some?”

So my problem is this event is designed to to get people that haven’t been into comics too much like my dad into them and all sorts of different people. And I know comic people like us are touchy that’s no way they react to a new reader.

Is this the reason why not so many new people are getting into comics? I don’t know but it annoys me.

  53. Yup sold out here in Toronto And that’s in Canada, they should kill Captain Canuck.

    Now there’s a big seller.

Have to check a couple more stores, wish me luck.

  54. Cap 25 was great! I haven’t felt this way about a comic since the last issue of Avengers Disassembled.
I had to go to 3 comic shops to find it, but it was well worth it!

I also picked up Dynamo 5 (Augie recommended it on his CBR column and podcast) by Jay Faeber and Mahmud Asrar and it was really good! A lot of fun and I think if you’re a fan of Invincible you will definitely dig it!

  55. Never really been much of a Cap fan but decided to pick this one up due to what I heard about it. Managed not to have it spoiled but heard that something important happened. It was a good book, no question. It wouldn’t have been my pick though. I thought Might Avengers and JLA were both great this week and I would’ve chosen between them but I certainly can see how Conor came up with this choice. I’m just glad that for the first time in four weeks, the POW isn’t something that I read in trade.

  56. In my opinion, Ed Brubaker has been doing a great job writing Captain America. I have never been into Cap much but everyone kept telling me that it was great. So I picked up the trades. Wow. Great stuff. He writes Captain America like he is Jack Bauer or someone in a Tom Clancy Novel.

And yes, The Punisher will be Captain America. He picked up Cap’s cowl.

I think Marvel is trying to make a statement about America today. Steve Rogers was a mirror of America in World War II. Frank Castle is what America is today.

    Richard
    http://1rightopinion-comics.blogspot.com/

  57. Yeah Conor, you definately should have gone with Jonah Hex. It was so damn good! I wouldn’t be reading this book if it weren’t for iFanboy, so thanks!

  58. Man did I get shafted, not only, did Cap sell out, but it didn’t go into my box, and Civil War the Initiative also sold out, and didn’t go into my box. Arghhh!

  59. Civil War the Initiative also sold out

    Consider yourself lucky.

  60. Well this is definitely a big book in comic history, I haven’t stopped thinking about it since it came out. And I keep wondering what’s going to happen next, is he dead for real? Who is going to take up the mantle of cap?

It’s also the best issue I’ve read this year, Ed Brubaker knows Captain America he knows how he thinks he knows how the characters around him interact with him you can tell he loves the character.

That’s the sense I didn’t get from Miller I didn’t get the sense he that he had an appreciation for Captain America by the end of it, where as Jenkins frontline gave you an extremely negative approach and Captain America thinking is a bumbling idiot that doesn’t know right from wrong.

In Captain America 25 you get the sense that this man has sacrificed everything for his country, he’s a true patriot that the didn’t deserved to be killed and martyred the way he did. Honestly I really don’t empathize with many other characters in the Marvel U he is my key in my hero and I’m very sad and depressed that he’s gone.

When things like this happen it makes me remember why I love comic books so much.

I had a lot of thick books this week and spent something like

  61. I think we’re all in the “He’s not all-dead” boat. I really hope it actually changes things; hoping for the best and still expecting the worst from the ramifications due to Spidey’s un-masking…

However, I think Cap’s death is actually going to deliver on the potential of great story lines. I love Winter Soldier, and with Brubaker behind the wheel? Man.

  62. One of the things I liked best about Captain America #25 was that Cap went down while pushing a Shield agent out of the way of Crossbone’s shot. It was such a little thing, but it realy summed up Cap’s position in Civil War, fighting and (now) dying for people who have forsaken you and called you a traitor.

Not to get too Evangelical (but hey, I am one so, what can I say?)But I found this whole Cap situation to be a bit of a Christ allegory.

  63. While I stand by my above comments about Captain America 25 being pick of the week, did anyone else think that the ending to the first Criminal arc was pure sex? I know I did.

Oh lord is Brubaker ever amazing.

  64. Anyone know where I can find an issue that fell off the truck?

Of what “trucks” do you spreak?

    🙂

  65. “Anyone know where I can find an issue that fell off the truck? Of what “trucks” do you spreak?

These are not hypothetical trucks in any way. They are actually Comic Book back issue delivery trucks that leave books to the more dedicated comic book fans. If you live in a major metropolitan are you should be able to figure it out.

  66. There are other vehicles that don’t deliver paper, but as somebody who lives in a place where there are few if any delivery trucks even if you are a dedicated fan, I have to rely on these other vehicles far more than I like — I hate them. I hate that distributors force me to these other vehicles. I absoultely hate that, I want paper, and Amazon Japan (always ahead of the curve and well stocked with trades these days) gets much money from me.

I like paper. I like kicking back and enjoying paper and the glory of a good comic on the printed page, and if I have a choice between something new and current that I can only get on the other kind of “vehicle,” I greatly prefer the one on paper, the printed page. For me, comics not in printed form take away (and I do not exaggerate) at least 50-60% of the comics reading enjoyment. Most in that format just sit around, probably great but never read.

I just finished reading on paper: Batman and the Monstermen, Trinity, Ex Machina 1&2 (then ordered the next 2), Starman, X-Factor: The Longest Night, and others, not terribly current, and all these just made me feel HIGH as a kite. I hate that other things that look “just OK” would look FANTASTIC on paper right in front of me.

So, until the major distributors can figure out that Tokyo, a city with 12 million people and not a few foreigners, is in fact a major metropolitan city, and an international one at that, I just do what I can to get my…

PAPER HIGH. Everything else is just more bad eye strain and a format that detracts from the beauty of pencils and inks and the joys of PAPER.

  67. Wait Cap died?!

God your podcast spoiled it for me…

I know bad joke but I couldn’t resist

  68. For anyone interested, or for those who missed out last wed. (like me), you can pick up a copy of cap #25 at midtowncomics.com, they got it in stock at cover price, so you guys might wanna check that out while they sitll have it, good luck

  69. I haven’t had the chance to read Cap 25 yet, but the death didn’t strike me as shocking. I had a similar, “He isn’t dead” reaction like most people but I half expected something like that to happen. The talk about dead and all dead is something I’ve been hearing a few places. Does anyone else remember that Tony and Reed were cloning people? Just a thought that struck me immediately after hearing he was killed. If I were to theorize, clone is dead and Steve is in hiding. Either completely or as Ronin.

  70. I know this comment is late(computer was being fixed) but i wanted to know if anyone read Bullet Points #5(i think). Such a good climax with the death of the Hulk. And Criminal was amazing. I’ve never gone through an arc of a straight crime book and brubaker is truly a master. So many good books this week, i’m glad that i wasnt conor having to pick the best out of my stack.

  71. Steve Rogers, not a clone of him, is dead, for the time being. This is the Marvel Universe and no one ever stays dead (I believe Uncle Ben even made a return of sorts in pre-Civil War Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man). Death is like a vacation for these characters. It is one of the only times when they can relax. In a world with Cosmic Cubes, Infinity Gems, mysticism, time travel and Nick Fury there are plenty of ways to bring Cap back, but after Civil War he deserves this little break. Cap, the real Thor and Genis-vell are hanging out with Jean Grey (’til death do us part), Namorita, and (I don’t know) Gwen Stacy. I am happy for the guy. Enjoy it while you can, Cap. We’ll read about Bucky until you’ve used up your vacation days.

  72. Anybody happen to catch Ron’s cameo appearance in “Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness”? Apparently if the zombies come, he’ll be the first to go.
