This was a really tough week for settling on the Pick of the Week which was quite unexpected considering the small number of books that I bought.

But there it was, three books could have easily won the coveted Pick of the Week title:

Gotham Central #15 was an excellent wrap up to the sniper Joker storyline. Nightwing #89 featured a genuinely shocking turn of events in the war between Nightwing and Blockbuster. But the comic book that I genuinely loved, that really made me smile was Superman: Secret Identity #1.

This book defies convention and categorization. It is not an Elseworlds book, and it is definitely not a DCUniverse book. So what is it? In 1990, in the small Kansas town of Hopefield, lives a high school student named Clark Kent. His parents, David and Laura Kent, thought that it would be fun to name their son after Superman. As you might imagine, being a quiet, introverted sort of kid named after a world famous comic book superhero isn’t a picnic, especially if you bare a passing resemblance to the guy. High school bullies don’t need that kind of help.

So Clark has a closet full of Superman paraphernalia that he gets as gifts every birthday and Christmas from clueless relatives who think that he must love Superman. He’s got a cute next door neighbor who dates his chief jock tormentor. And he’s got an old typewriter that is, in a lot of ways, his only friend. His days are pretty much the same: quietly endured torment with no end in sight.

Until one day Clark goes camping and wakes up the next day hovering above the ground. He finds himself suddenly possessing the powers of his comic book namesake.

As comic book readers, I’m sure that this is something we’ve all fantasized about at one time or another. What would we do?

This is such an interesting and novel idea from the mind and pen of Kurt Busiek. It’s a sort of fusion of his traditional superhero work and Astro City.

Stuart Immonen has been one of my favorite artists for years. He has a dynamic yet realistic style that is perfect for a tale that straddles the real world and the comic book world.

  3. Some people think so.  I don’t, I think it stands seperately on its own.
