iFanboy – Episode #238 – New York Comic Con 2011 – Part Three

Show Notes

Once yearly, the comics industry descends on the far west side of Manhattan and crams into the all too tiny confines of the Javit’s Center for New York Comic Con. And as we do, iFanboy is there to talk to your favorite creators and get the scoop on what’s going on and what’s coming up.

It’s always a treat and a pleasure to talk to the writing team of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, who have been very busy of late! Their entry into the New 52 at DC Comics has been Resurrection Man, a title they originally launched in the 1990s. Meanwhile, at Marvel, DnA have been busy with the New Mutants role in Regenesis, as well as going street level with Villains for Hire.

No convention is complete without checking in with Crazy Insane Person Jim McCann, who was at the New York Comic Con with a big announcement: Mind the Gap, an ongoing series at Image Comics. Jim fills us in on what the new project is and what we can expect to see when it launches in 2012.  We also get a glimpse of the sequel to the Eisner Award winning Return of the Dapper Men AND a bonus cameo from a mysterious Marvel staffer clad in a hat and a duster.

One of the more beautiful books at the con this year was Mr. Murder Is Dead and we chat with artist Brent Schoonover about the Dick Tracy-esque graphic novel from Archaia and how he was the perfect man for the job.

Coming off the big announcement of the new series from Marvel Comics, Scarlet Spider, fan favorite artist Ryan Stegman chats about how nerve wracking it can be to announce a new series about a controversial character and some of the more exciting aspects of what lies ahead for the this new character and his world.

He’s one of the hardest working men in comics, it’s Top Cow publisher and creator Filip Sablik. Not only is he helping to usher in a new age of comics at Top Cow as they reach milestone issues with their flagship characters, but he’s also editing the largest offering of Pilot Season books ever in 2011, and on top of that, he WROTE one of the Pilot Season books as well! When does the man sleep?

For Marvel fans, one of the most exciting announcements was the new creative team on Secret Avengers, and we caught up with the new ongoing artist, Gabriel Hardman. Coming off his year on Hulk with Jeff Parker, Hardman shares his approach to Secret Avengers as well as chats about his 2 projects that he collaborated with his wife on, Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes and The Liar. Also, something about a movie with a guy dressed up like a bat…

  1. Watching this in a London park with my Iphone on my lunch break. Best weekly book club ever. Thanks guys!

  2. Another great one, gents! Though I must admit, beside Hardman and McCann, I mostly didn’t care for the interviews.

  3. Oh sweet, New Josh made it into the show ;). I loved that y’all talked to Filip he is truly coolest publisher I have met. More Topcow talk for the POTW show 🙂

  4. I love it how Gabe Hardman’s face lit up when you guys started talking about Planet of the Apes.

  5. Great interviews, as always. And that intro never ceases to amaze me.

  6. great show guys, thanks

  7. Ron says it all the time(about the ifanbase catching mistakes), and I’m truly not trying to be THAT guy. At the end of the Hardman interview when the social interaction links are being scrolled you misspelled facebook.com/ifanboy……….. what appears on screen is facbeook.com/ifanboy. Just letting you guys know. Great show though, I can’t wait for the scarlet spiderman series to begin. Isn’t Yost working on the new spiderman animated show with Bendis?

  8. Fun, as always…Conor looked thrown off or weirded out by McCann.
