I’m about halfway through The Open Curtain by Brian Evenson. Creepy Mormon murder mystery-ish tale. I also am breaking my manga cherry with Monster by Naoki Urasawa. Oddly, it’s set in Germany and the protagonist is a neurosurgeon. Murder and suspense are promised.

Newuniversal is a maybe for me. I’m an Ellis fan but the original New Universe was… yeah. Maybe in trades. If I hear good things. From everyone.

On another note I really wish The Walking Dead wouldn’t put another issue out as soon as they have. When the book gets as far behind as this one can instead of putting out two issues in two weeks release this one a month later and get some extra lead time. It just seems like common sense to me.

  5. Newuniversal is a maybe for me. I’m an Ellis fan but the original New Universe was… yeah. Maybe in trades. If I hear good things. From everyone.

I’m on the fence about it. I’ll probably glance at a random page at the store and my gut reaction will decide.

  6. Here’s my weekly list:

    52
    Detective
    Justice Society of America
    Manhunter
    Doctor Strange

A light week again, so that’s nice. Should allow me to catch up on back issues and recently purchased Preacher trades.

Recently, I’m reading “My Father the Spy,” a little biography about a former British Spy. I am on vacation next week, so I may try to tackle Europe Central and Beasts of No Nation, two novels that I haven’t had time to read yet. And I also have the second part of Roddy Doyle’s Henry Smart trilogy to get to this season…

I thought Rucka’s novels were AWESOME!

  7. DETECTIVE COMICS #826
    SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL #2
    NIGHTLY NEWS #2
    DOCTOR STRANGE OATH #3
    IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN #3
    NEWUNIVERSAL #1
    STAN LEE MEETS SILVER SURFER

In non-comic book reading I am hip deep in articles and texts about teaching writing, teaching philosophies, and developing lessons. Once I am finished with the semester I am taking “Long for This World,” by Michael Byers, off of my pile of novels to be read.

    Ant-Man #3

    Justice Society of America #1

    Nice and simple.

  12. 52 WEEK #31 $2.50

    RUNAWAYS VOL 2 HC $24.99
    UNCANNY X-MEN #481 $2.99
    ESTANCIA #2 (OF 17) (MR) $3.50

The usual suspects should be good – Dr Strange, Walking Dead, Cross Bronx. I loved the first issue of Nightly News so I’m looking forward to that too. Estancia will be ass-awful if it is anything like the first issue, but I had already ordered 1-2 online. Bah.

Is Dini writing Detective this week?

I’m reading Aztec by Gary Jennings. Great historical-fiction about the life of an Aztec warrior. Very long but it’s worth it.

  13. DETECTIVE COMICS #826

Written by Paul Dini; Art by Don Kramer and Wayne Faucher; Cover by Simone Bianchi

Series writer Paul Dini returns as an unexpected twist of fate places Robin directly in the clutches of Batman’s archenemy, the Joker! Alone and incapacitated, Robin must summon every bit of his courage and ingenuity to free himself before the madman ends the Boy Wonder’s life!

  14. 52 WEEK #31

    MARVEL HOLIDAY SPECIAL
    NEWUNIVERSAL #1
    SPIDER-MAN REIGN #1 (OF 4)
    ULTIMATE VISION #1 (OF 5)
    UNCANNY X-MEN #481

    Detective Comics #826
    Justice Society of America #1
    Manhunter #26
    Mystery in Space #4
    Nightwing #127
    Outsiders #43
    Supergirl #12

    The Walking Dead #33

  16. DETECTIVE COMICS #826, but only after examining it very carefully. I must personally see the word “Dini” in two distinct places, and see the words “baking soda” nowhere.

    INVINCIBLE #37
    INCREDIBLE HULK #101
    IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN #3
BEYOND #6: let’s see this through to the end

NEWUNIVERSAL #1: for some reason this reminds me of the Shazam conversation. I hope this ‘name’ writer’s reimagining doesn’t piss off me and the rest of the New Universe fans, Steve and Bill.

    SPIDER-MAN REIGN #1
    UNCANNY X-MEN #481

Outside of comics, I can currently recommend Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife by Mary Roach. But I’m not reading anything right now: SNL season one came out on DVD today, so I expect I’ll be disappearing for the next ten days or so.

  17. This is a heavy week for me:
    52 Week 31
    Batman Confidential #1
    Detective Comics #826
    Justice Society of America #1
    Outsiders #43
    Superman Confidential #2
    Tranquility #1
Beyond #6 (what a cool suprise this has been)
    Dr. Strange: Oath #3
    New X-Men Vol. 3 Childhood’s End
    Ultimate Vision #1
    Uncanny X-Men #481
    White Tiger #2

I just plowed through both Jinx and Goldfish by Brian Michael Bendis this weekend. Now I’m reading “The Fifth Elephant” by Terry Pratchett and “Conspiracy of Fools” by Ken Eichenwald.

  18. INVINCIBLE #37
    WALKING DEAD #33
    INCREDIBLE HULK #101
    IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN #3
    UNCANNY X-MEN #481

Still waiting to receive from comic hole:
    GIRLS #19
    SEA OF RED #13
    GODLAND #14
    DAREDEVIL #91
    AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #536
    SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #32

I don’t mind waiting because the prices are sooo much better and I’d rather not be exposed to the living at home way too long, no bathing, fantasy board game playing, living off of soda and doritos crowd. God bless them, I wish them no ill will. But I can’t help but feel disgusted by them. The bad thing is that, inside, I am one of them and it scares me.

The following from comic hole for my kids:
    SPIDER-MAN AND POWER PACK #2
    BATMAN #659
    WONDER WOMAN #3
    SCOOBY DOO #114

Here’s what I have on order from mycomicshop.com:
    Hulk vs. Thing (1999) 1
    New Gods (1971-78 1st Series) 1VG03
    Strange Tales (1951-76) 135FN02
    Ultimate X-Men TPB (2001) 14-1ST
and the rest of the original Eternals run that I don’t yet have.

For David G. on what I’m reading besides comics:
    The God Delusion, Richard Dawkins
    America’s Secret War, George Friedman
    Coyote, Allen Steele
The Basics of Anesthesia, Ronald Miller

  19. Didn’t mean to single out David G. I didn’t read all the post thoroughly initially and thought he was the only one sharing non-comic reading.

  20. Ummmm…no big deal.

    ULTIMATE VISION #1 (OF 5) $2.99

I just finished Michael Pollen’s “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” and I’m about to start Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road.” I also have “The Night Gardener” by George Pelecanos on deck.

  24. sleeplessdave said: “I’m reading “The Fifth Elephant” by Terry Pratchett and “Conspiracy of Fools” by Ken Eichenwald.”

Consipracy of Fools is awesome. I have an unhealthy obsession with the Enron collapse and have read several books on it. That book is easily the most readable and understandable to a layperson. Anyone remotely interested in the Enron debacle or the dangerous effect of greed in corporate America should read it. It’s not the easiest read out there, but it is well worth it. Highly recommended.

  25. I’m not buying anything because I’m overdrawn but I’m about halfway through a book called Slow Man by a guy named Coetzee. I like it.

  26. DOCTOR STRANGE OATH #3
    BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #1
    DETECTIVE COMICS #826
    Uncanny X-Men #481

And Maybe: JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #1

Exams are comin up, so I’m without a good prose, but I plan on heading to the used book store and grabbing some alternative history.

  27. Great, another sizable week to add to my holiday credit card bill. But hey, my rebate should be coming in soon, right?

In the order they’ll be read, more or less:

    SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL #2
    WALKING DEAD #33
    DOCTOR STRANGE OATH #3
    52 WEEK #31
    NEWUNIVERSAL #1
    JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #1
    JONAH HEX #14
    ULTIMATE VISION #1
    DETECTIVE COMICS #826
    AMERICAN SPLENDOR #4
NEW TALES OF OLD PALOMAR #1 (if I remembered to order it…)

As far as less pictures and more text goes, I have on my bedside table: Jonathan Lethem’s “Men & Cartoons,” a collection of short stories (the first one is titled “The Vision,” yes, that Vision) Lethem is writing an Omega the Unknown story, some obscure Marvel character that I know nothing about, but Farel Dalrymple (Pop Gun War), one of my favorites, is drawing it; the last two issues of The Comics Journal; a Bible; and that new issue of Acme Novelty Library, which I know is mostly a comic but the damn things usually take several hours to read. Oh, and Eisner’s “Comics & Sequential Art.” I think that’s it.

What I’m not reading the weekly pub that I spend 5060 hours a week putting out.

  28. Mithel: How is the Zadie Smith book? I got about halfway through “Autograph Man” but never finished it. I enjoyed what I did read. I’ve heard good things about “On Beauty.”

MP: I’ve been wanting to read “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” since I heard an interview with the author on Fresh Air and was amazed. Did you like it?

  29. Derek, you should read Eichenwald’s first book, The Informant. One of the best non-fiction books I’ve ever read.

  30. DETECTIVE COMICS #826
    JONAH HEX #14
    NEWUNIVERSAL #1
    SPIDER-MAN REIGN #1
    UNCANNY X-MEN #481

I’m about to start reading “5 People You Meet in Heaven” by the guy who wrote Tuesday’s with Morrie.

  31. 52 WEEK #31
    SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL #2
NEWUNIVERSAL #1 (I’ll admit, I was a D.P.7 fan, this just better not suck as hardcore as the recent “Untold Tales of the New Universe”)

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #1 (maybe, if just for the cover)

A light week for me, but I’m trying to cut my titles down a bit. As for non-comic reading, I’m actually in a production of “A Christmas Carol” right now, so I haven’t had much time for that (although I do have the first trade of “Powers” waiting for me at the library). The book I’ll most likely read next is Bruce Campbell’s autobiography “If Chins Could Kill”.

  32. 52 WEEK #31
    BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #1
    JONAH HEX #14
    JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #1

And I’m reading Penny Dreadful by Will Christopher Baer the second Phineas Poe noir book.

  33. Aaron –

I totally dug The Omnivore’s Dilemma, I’d recommend it to anybody. It’s really great.

  34. Omnivore’s Dilemma sounds like it will be really interesting in a way that makes me want to kill myself. That whole “if you think about it, basically everything Americans eat is made of corn” thing stopped me in my tracks.

If you’re an ol’ Christmas softie like me, you ought to go find the old audiobook of Patrick Stewart reading “A Christmas Carol” and acting out all the parts (based on his stage show). A girlfriend got it for me like ten years ago, and it is an annual highlight of the season.

  35. Hey guys, I just finished reading JSA #1 and it is fantastic!! Any DC fan debating on this one (I doubt you exist) should make sure to pick this up. I’m not sure about New Universal. I suppose I will wait to see what other people say before I get it. And yes, I know its Tuesday, but my shop gets it a day early so lucky me.

  36. Y’all’s some smart book readin’ sonsabitches here!

    BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #1
    52 WEEK #31
    AVENGERS EARTH MIGHTIEST HEROES #3
    DETECTIVE COMICS #826
DOCTOR STRANGE OATH #3 (OF 5)
    IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN #3
    JONAH HEX #14
    STRANGERS IN PARADISE #86
    SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL #2

And I’m about 100 pages into the third book of Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Trilogy, The System of the World. I expect to finish some time in June.

  37. INVINCIBLE #37
    INCREDIBLE HULK #101
    DOCTOR STRANGE OATH #3

  38. In non-comics news I’m reading Farewell My Lovely by Raymond Chandler, and I keep meaning to get to Confessions of an Economic Hit Man and Deeply Disturbing Dexter…

  39. It’s a very unusual week. The book I am most exicted about isn’t a comic. Someone who comes to my local comic shop has written a book and it hits my shop today. The title is “Wisdom from the Batcave”, written by Cary A. Friedman. Cary is a HUGE Batman fan and has taken lessons from the Batman book and applied them to everyday life. If you are a comics fan, you should check this out.

    Comics-wise it looks like this:

    52 Week 31
    JSA #1
    Nightwing #127
    Outsiders #43
    Cross Bronx #4
    Hulk #101
    New Universal #1
    Uncanny #481

  40. The title is “Wisdom from the Batcave”, written by Cary A. Friedman.

I saw this at the store today!

(And I bought NewUniversal because it looked so pretty)

  41. DC COMICS
    BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #1
    DESOLATION JONES #8
    EXTERMINATORS #12
    OTHER SIDE #3
    TRANQUILITY #1

    IMAGE COMICS
    WALKING DEAD #33

    MARVEL COMICS
